Trinity Catholic Girls Win McCluer North/Trinity Soccer Tournament

Trinity Catholic Soccer Coach Vince Drake is now focusing on the girls team four months after the boys team took second in Missouri State High School Activities Association Class One.

Last week Trinity went 3-0 in winning the McCluer North/Trinity Varsity Soccer Tournament. The Titans shut out McCluer, 4-0, then defeated McCluer North, 2-1, and Rosati-Kain, 2-1. Trinity began Archdiocesan Athletic Association play March 31 against Bishop DuBourg while playing Rosati-Kain in an AAA game Thursday, 5:30 at Harris-Stowe State University.
Against McCluer Alicia Vonderheid, Abby Whittington, Jen Eaton and Caroline Keppler each scored a goal while Vonderheid, Whittington, Kelli Costello and Jill Springli each had an assist while Taylor Zerbe and Katie Costello each shared goalkeeping duties in the shutout. Against McCluer North Eaton scored a goal and assisted on an Alexis Jackson goal after McCluer North led 1-0 at halftime. In last week’s game against Rosati Jackson and Vonderheid each scored while Eaton and Heather Wein each had an assist.

McCLUER NORTH went 2-1 in taking second place in the McCluer North/Trinity Varsity Tournament. Sandwiched around the loss to Trinity McCluer North defeated Rosati-Kain, 2-1, and Suburban North Conference rival McCluer, 2-0. McCluer North opened play in the Suburban North Conference Tournament March 30at Hazelwood Central (results unavailable) and plays McCluer May 13 at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley.

Against Rosati Rachel Franck and Kelsey Necker each scored while Xenia Hatina added an assist. In the loss to Trinity Franck scored a first-half goal on an assist from Alicia Horton. In the shutout over McCluer High Franck scored her third goal of the tournament, Miranda Graham added a goal, Valerie Jennerjohn and Carrie Latimore each had an assist while Beth Boedeker, Mary Jennerjohn and Jacqueline Curtright shared goalkeeping duties.

McCLUER went 0-3 and scoreless in the McCluer North/Trinity Varsity Tournament losing to Trinity, Rosati, 8-0, and McCluer North. McCluer had a pair of games earlier this week at SLCC-FV, playing Ritenour in the first round of the Suburban North Tournament March 30 and Mary Institute/Country Day School March 31.

ROSATI-KAIN was led last week by Emily Hamm with four goals and Kelly Goerhing had three goals and two assists. Alyssa Bujnak had a goal and an assist, Nora Farrell and Catherine Gould each scored a goal while Becky Aubuchon, Jill Griebel, Rachell Kellett, Liz Salsich and Michelle Scally each tallied an assist. Hamm and Goerhing each scored three goals in the win over McCluer.

BI-STATE SHOOTOUT AT SPORTPORT, Maryland Heights — HAZELWOOD CENTRAL AND HAZELWOOD WEST each went 2-1 last week. Both lost to O’Fallon, Ill., and both defeated Alton, Ill.-Marquette Catholic. Hazelwood Central also defeated Mascoutah, Ill., 1-0, while Hazelwood West also defeated Northwest-Cedar Hill, 3-0.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL got a second half goal by Lisa Wren, assisted by Claire Conwell-Vargas in the shutout of Alton-Marquette as goalkeeper Nikki Walsh stopped three shots. Against Mascoutah Kelsey Evans set up Tevar Dildy with a second-overtime goal in a 1-0 shutout, the second for Walsh in the first two games. O’Fallon, however beat Central 2-0.

HAZELWOOD WEST opened the shootout with a shutout of Northwest-Cedar Hill as Mariah Gove scored two goals and assisted on an Ashley Geist goal while Suzy Ryan and Amy Ward each had an assist and Jena Casagrande stopped five Northwest shots. West lost 2-1 to O’Fallon, Ill., which was decided on penalty kicks, Casagrande had seven saves. West defeated Alton-Marquette, 3-1.

On March 30, the first round of the Suburban North Conference Tournament, Central hosted McCluer North, McCluer played Ritenour at SLCC-FV, West hosted Riverview Gardens and Hazelwood East visited Pattonville

NORTH COUNTY CHRISTIAN, defending Missouri Christian State Athletic Association champions, opened the season with wins over Christian Academy of Greater St. Louis, 9-0 on March 17, and Eagle Ridge Christian, 10-0 on March 20.
