Stars, Titans: District Soccer Top Seeds

By Jim Wieners

McCluer North Stars Boys Soccer, the only team among North St. Louis County Missouri State High School Activities Association member institutions — especially among Suburban North Conference schools — to have a winning record, is seeded first in Class Three, District Four that will be held Nov. 2-6 at Pattonville High School Stadium.

The Trinity Catholic Titians, despite having a losing record (9-11-1) prior to Oct. 28, is the top seed in Class One, District Four Nov. 2, 6 at Whitfield.

McCluer North, 13-9-1 prior to Oct. 28, Suburban North Conference champions, will play this Monday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. The opponent will be decided Saturday, Nov. 2 when fourth-seeded Hazelwood West plays fifth-seeded Hazelwood Central at 11 a.m. Prior to the Stars taking the field second-seeded Francis Howell North play third-seeded Pattonville, the tourney host, at 4 p.m.

Monday’s winners play Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. in the tourney final for the right to play at the winner of District Three Nov. 12 in the Sectional. Game times after Nov. 2 are in Standard Time.

McCluer North head coach Eric Urban said after the Stars won 7-1 at North Tech Oct. 24 he is “happy with getting the number one seed” in Class Three, District Four. Urban said the Stars started slowly, off to a 4-7 start, because “we played in three tough tournaments (the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament where the Stars took second place, the St. Louis Shootout and the CYC Tournament-Msgr. Walsh Division) against quality tournament teams. The Stars were 3-6 in the three tournaments combined including 2-0 against Fort Zumwalt North and 0-2 against Wentzville-Timberland but after the tourneys and before Oct. 28 the Stars went on a 9-2-1 run including a 6-0 sweep against the Suburban North and defeated Trinity 2-0 Oct 25.

CLASS ONE, DISTRICT FOUR — There are two fields at Whitfield on the Corner of Mason and Ladue Roads and there are no lights. So Saturday at 12 noon Trinity takes on second-seeded North Tech on one field while second-seeded Whitfield plays third-seeded Lutheran North on the other. Saturday’s winners play each other Nov. 6, 3:30 and the tourney winner plays at the District Three winner in the Nov. 12 sectional.

Trinity was 3-3 in the Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small Division going 1-1 against John F. Kennedy, Lutheran-St. Charles County and O’Fallon Christian. The Titans were 0-2-1 in the CYC Tournament Msgr. Meyer Division and was 2-1 in their own tourney, second to St. Charles West.

CLASS THREE, DISTRICT EIGHT — The Tournament, to be played at St. Louis University High, begins Saturday at 11 a.m. as fourth-seeded McCluer battles fifth-seeded Hazelwood East with the winner playing Nov. 5, 7 p.m. against top-seeded Chaminade. Meanwhile SLUH, seeded second, plays third-seeded Ritenour Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. The district final is Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. and the winner plays at the District Seven winner in the Nov. 12 Sectional.
