Incarnate Word Academy is making their third straight trip to Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium Nov. 5-6 in hopes of winning their 12th state championship since 1976,but their first since 2005.
It will be the Red Knights’ 24th state semifinal appearance and their fourth in a row. IWA (29-8) will play Class Four round-robin semifinal matches (two-games each) Nov. 5 beginning at 5 p.m. against Ozark (38-5), followed at 7 p.m. with a match against Lee’s Summit West (34-4) and close out at 9 p.m. against Metro Women’s Athletic Association rival St. Joseph’s Academy (33-7). On Nov. 6 the top two teams from round-robin matches play at 5:30 for the Class Four title while the lower two play at 8:30 for third place.
IWA won Class Four District Five and Sectional Two at home. In District Five, Oct 27, IWA defeated University City, 25-4, 25-2, and Rosati-Kain, 25-5, 25-10, their 30th district title since 1976. In Sectional Two, Oct. 30 IWA defeated Francis Howell, 25-17, 25-19 and Rockwood-Marquette, 25-1, 25-22.
CROSS COUNTRY Lutheran North will be competing for the Class Two Girls State Team title Nov. 6 at 1:05 p.m. at Oak Hills Golf Course, Jefferson City. Lutheran North won the District Two title Oct. 30 at Spanish Lake Park with four runners finishing in the top 10 — Senior Anna Rathje (second), junior Meagan Schmidt (sixth), sophomore Elizabeth McKittrick (seventh) and freshman Allison Schmidt (eighth). Lutheran North will send three boys — seniors Michael Merchant and Christopher Floyd (second and third in District Two) and sophomore Joshua Blight — to running at state at 11:50 a.m.
In Class Four State boys that will run at 10:15 a.m. include McCluer North sophomore Nicolas Stewart (Sectional Two runner up Oct. 30 at McNair Park, St Charles), McCluer North junior Drew Mueller, Hazelwood West junior Anthony Riggs and Hazelwood Central senior William Mitchell. Two Incarnate Word Academy sophomores, Maddie Orf and Megan Whitehead, will run in Class Four Girls State at 9 a.m. Coty Williams, McCluer South-Berkeley, will run in the Class Three Boys State event at 10:45 a.m.
