In Dist. Class 6, This Time In 2 OTs
By Jim Wieners
For the third year in a row Christian Brothers College High ended Hazelwood Central’s Football season in the Class Six, District Two (a.k.a. the State Quarterfinals) and for the second year in a row CBC scored 47 points against the Hawks.
This time, however, the game was played at Hazelwood Central, after the previous two were held at CBC. However, unlike the previous two years when the games were decided early the Nov. 5 game was not decided until the final play of the second overtime. In the end CBC won 47-40 thus the 11-1 Cadets host 9-2 and District Three Champion Blue Springs in one Friday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m. Semifinal while in the other District One champion Kirkwood visits District Four Champion Kansas City. The semifinal winners play for the Class Six State title Nov.18, 7 p.m. at Faurot Field, University of Missouri, Columbia.
CBC sophomore quarterback Brett Gabbert was the major reason in the Cadet win as he passed for 369 yards and 6 touchdowns. Gabbert caught a touchdown pass four seconds into the fourth quarter from Cameron Brown, who caught a Gabbert TD pass 4:48 later. Gabbert scoring plays tied the game twice including the first overtime and put the Cadets ahead five times including the eventual game winner in the second overtime, on the next drive after tying the game in the first overtime.
Hazelwood Central seniors Antonio Triplett Jr. and Jarame Crawford and junior Raphael Bell did all the Hawk scoring. Triplett Jr. ran for three touchdowns including the first drive in the first overtime while catching a second-quarter touchdown pass from Bell, who ran for a fourth-quarter touchdown, and all scores put the Hawks in the lead only to see CBC and Gabbert tie it each time.
Crawford hit a 29-yard field goal with 1:50 left in the third quarter to take a 17-13 lead only to see CBC and Gabbert take the lead back 1:54 later then Crawford tied the game at 33-33 on a 43-yard field goal with no time left in regulation time to send the game to overtime. Hazelwood Central last defeated CBC 26-24 at home on Nov. 16, 2013.
CHAMINADE 43, HAZELWOOD EAST 12 — Hazelwood East finished 8-3 and for the second year in a row lost in Class Five, District Two to Chaminade College Prep, this time in the district final as Damon Bonds Jr. ran for three Chaminade touchdowns while Bryce Johnson ran for two more.
Chaminade, 9-1, visits District One Champion St. John Vianney (6-5) Friday, 7 p.m. in a quarterfinal rematch of a Sept. 17 game won 47-32 by Chaminade. That winner will play in the Nov.19 semifinal against District Seven champion Park Hill or District Eight Champion Staley, site, time TBD, and the State Championship game is Nov. 26, 7 p.m. at Plaster Stadium, Missouri State University, Springfield
