Hazelwood Central Wins North

County Round-Robin Softball

Hazelwood Central Softball wins three games during the Sept. 6-7 weekend and won the North County Round-Robin Varsity Tournament at Central and McCluer North

On Sept. 6, Hazelwood Central defeated McCluer North 18-9 while on Sept. 7 the Hawks defeated Clayton 14-4 and Trinity Catholic 20-15.

All games ended on 90-minute time limits. Hazelwood Central scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning as the game against McCluer North was only three innings long. Junior Shelly Sullivan and senior Cydney Grady each drove in 3 runs while senior Jaymie Dickson scored three runs.

Against Clayton, Hazelwood Central led 11-0 in the middle of the third inning and it was over after four. Senior Jaelyn Rhodes hits a grand slam home run while sophomore Errianna Meriwether scored four runs. Hazelwood Central scored nine runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-5 lead over Trinity Catholic, which scored 10 in the bottom of the third as time put an end to that. Meriwether, Rhodes and sophomore Aliyah Robinson each scored three runs each while Sullivan driven in three.

Hazelwood Central lost to Incarnate Word Academy 17-0, defeated Riverview Gardens 24-0 and hosted Pattonville Sept.10. The Hawks host Parkway North Thursday, Sept. 12 at 4:15.

McCLUER NORTH rebounded from the loss to Hazelwood Central in the North County Round Robin with a 15-12 win Sept. 7 over Trinity Catholic. The Stars did not play Clayton.

McCluer North scored nine runs in the first inning of a five-inning game against Trinity, which scored seven in the top of the fourth. Five Stars scored two runs each while Freshman Zoe Hanagean and senior Kristen Tirado each drove in two.

McCluer North defeated Riverview Gardens 22-6, was at Fort Zumwalt North Sept. 9 and at home Sept. 11 against Orchard Farm. The Stars are at Ladue Thursday at 4:15.

   TRINITY CATHOLIC — In a five-inning 12-10 loss Sept. 6 to Clayton junior Saana Khan had three and drove in 3 runs while junior Izzy Miller scored three runs. Against McCluer North, Miller, who hit a home run and drove in five runs, and juniors Mikyah Cooper and Liberty Webb each scored twice. Against Hazelwood Central Khan and sophomore Lauren Swindle each drove in three runs.

   FOOTBALL — HAZELWOOD WEST, 1-1, hosts 1-1 Mehlville Friday, Sept. 13, at 4:15 and 1-1 Hazelwood Central (see related article) Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. Last year in the first round of Class Six, District :One Hazelwood West snapped a 46-game Hazelwood Central win streak against Suburban North Conference and Suburban Conference, XII North Division opponents 20-14 at Central, whose last conference loss was in 2011 21-10 at home to McCluer North.

Hazelwood West lost 3-0 Aug. 30 at home to 1-1 Oakville in a storm-shortened (less than two quarters) game. The Wildcats rebounded Sept .7 with a 57-6 pounding at 0-2 Soldan-International Studies.
