Cards on the Brink Of Their Greatest Season

BY RANDY GARDNER

As I sit and write the column today, I am amazed at where we sit right now. Stop and think about it. The Cardinals are two games away from the World Series title. Winning game and as of Thursday,(publication date) we could be just one game away.

Who would have ever thought, back in March when I was writing about the optimism of this team that wthe Cardinals would be here. Is it luck? Is it fate? Who cares really, we are here.

I say it all of the time, that it just takes getting hot at the right time to win big games. As we really try to break all of this down,
The Cards are winning without a lot of run production from our big names in the lineup and this includes Albert Pujols

This says a lot for this entire team.

I am really impressed this series by Yadier Molina. He has been clutch for this team in almost every instance with some huge hits including the Home Run against the Mets and some great defense catching. He is always a threat to throw someone out at first base. This keeps the runners tight and keeps them out of scoring position. He had a big double in Tuesday’s game.

THE DIRTY HAND ISSUE

One thing that I could talk for a year is the so-called Kenny Rogers dirty issue and why it has not been made into a bigger deal than it has by Major League Baseball. I think this is utter crap.

There have been so many excuses about what it was and why it was there. There are no excuses. Did he have a substance on his hand? If he did he is gone. There have been a couple of great theories.

If the series goes to game 6 and Rogers has to pitch again and cannot use a substance per say, maybe he will dramatically lose his focus and pitching that he has had in the past two weeks. The other being, if you call him on this, it could open a whole can of worms for the Redbirds, as Detroit would be checking on everything the Cards do. Not that they have done anything wrong but why put yourself in that position.

The old theory, worry about what’s in your own backyard and you will be fine. I still think that it is terrible that MLB did not act more proactively about the situation, but Tony LaRussa did take the right approach in the whole thing.

With all of that behind us, I think this has been one of the best playoff seasons ever for Major League Baseball. All of the games have been exciting all the way to the end with a couple of late game wins. You couldn’t ask for more. Its hard to believe that just a few years ago after the lockout, I was saying that it would take a long time for baseball to rebound with the fans. Boy, was I wrong.

Finally, I f you are lucky enough to go to the games, enjoy and cherish them, it will be a memory for a lifetime. Win or Lose!!
GO CARDS!!
