DeSmet Wins Rugby, SLUH Wins Water Polo, Incarnate Fourth In Girls Soccer

As the summer prep season has ended, there were  recent events for state championships is some of the so-called minor sports. They are not minor sports to the participants.

DeSmet Jesuit High School won the Missouri Rugby Football Union championship recently , their second in three years

DeSmet, according to a Missouri Rugby Football Union report, defeated Park Hill South, 27-12, in the title game played two weekends ago, site not mentioned. DeSmet was 12-1 for the season.

Andrew Klingler was named Most Valuable Player of the weekend as he made four out of five try conversion points and landed five penalty kicks. Chris Meier, Paul Ringkamp and Nick Radice each reached the try zone for scores.

Prior to playing Park Hill South DeSmet defeated Parkway United, 18-5, June 4 in Jefferson City. Klingler kicked two penalties and a conversion while Mike Kellett and Princeton Russell each scored a try.

In 11 games, all wins, Klingler kicked 14 conversions after tries and five penalties while Troy Sanford scored 12 tries.

In District D, a regular season conference DeSmet defeated Fox, 38-0, Marquette, 32-12, and Jefferson City, 27-5.

Rugby is not a varsity sport, according to the Missouri State High School Activities Association.

St. Louis University High won their fifth Missouri Boys Water Polo state championship in six years, rebounding from a fourth-place finish last year that snapped a string of four straight titles. DeSmet was 28-1, including 7-0 in the Suburban Central Conference. SLUH only lost on April 16 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in the DeSmet Invitational Championship game, 17-8 to eventual Illinois High School Association champion Oak Park Fenwick Catholic.

At the St. Peters Rec-Plex the road to the championship for SLUH included wins over Clayton, 22-2 on May 7,  Marquette, 11-3 on May 11, Parkway West, 13-5 on May 13 and Ladue, 9-6 on May 14.

Junior Sam Erlinger led SLUH with 174 shots, 89 goals and 71 assists for 249 points. Seniors Michael Hagerty and Mitch Kramer each scored five game-winning goals.

Water Polo is a recognized varsity sport according to MSHSAA but with less than 50 schools (at least 21 in the St. Louis area) MSHSAA does not sponsor the state Water Polo championships.

Incarnate Word Academy, prior to this year, has possession on 17 State Girls Soccer trophies including nine championships but no fourth place finishes. Two weekends ago at the Anheuser-Busch Center, Fenton, IWA ended up with a fourth-place trophy in Class Three after losing to Metro Women’s Athletic Association White Division rival and eventual state champion Ursuline Academy, 2-1 in overtime June 3, and to Springfield-Glendale, 2-0 June 4

The road to the 18th state semifinals for IWA began at Ritenour in District Five with a pair of 10-0 wins, over Hazelwood East on May 17 (called in the 43rd minute) and over Ritenour on May 19. IWA was home for the May 24 Sectional Round, a 3-2 win over Suburban North Champion Pattonville, and for the May 28 Quarterfinal game, a 4-0 shutout over Francis Howell North.

On the season sophomore Mel Donaldson scored 12 goals, senior McKenzie Combs has nine assists and senior Jamie Helfer has 1.24 goals against average with 59 saves.

DeSMET TOOK FOURTH IN CLASS FOUR BOYS GOLF–In a tight five-team race from second place to sixth May 16-17 in Springfield, DeSmet took fourth place in Class Four with a two-day total of 632. DeSmet finished one stroke behind Kansas City Rockhurst and Francis Howell one stroke ahead of Parkway South and four strokes ahead of Poplar Bluff. Columbia-Rock Bridge (614) won the team title

Scott M. Hamel, DeSmet, shared ninth place (153) with Derek Peterson, Carthage. Mike Wooten, Francis Howell (143) won the individual title.

DeSmet won District Three (309) April 27 and Sectional Two (322) May 4. Hamel won District Three while his teammate, Nicholas R. Arman, won Sectional Two.
