Hazelwood West Having Historic
Football Season With 7-1 Record

After years of winning conference and state Football titles at Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood East High Schools, it is now time for Hazelwood West to stand on top.
After opening the season with a 3-0 loss to 1-7 Oakville, called in the first half by thunderstorms and a tornado warning Aug. 30, Hazelwood West proceeds to win what is a school record seven consecutive games.
The Wildcats have four Suburban Conference XII North Division wins, assuring West of a share of the conference title for the first time since 2008 when the ‘Cats shared the Suburban North Conference title with Class Six State Champion Hazelwood Central. That same year Hazelwood East won the Class Five State title.
Saturday, Oct. 26, Hazelwood West hosts a 1 p.m. Suburban XII North game against Class Four, District Two Hazelwood East (2-2 Suburban XII North, 3-5 overall), and a Wildcat win not only clinches their first conference title in school history but also becomes the first, team other than Hazelwood Central to win the Suburban XII North. In addition, Hazelwood West will be playing their first on-campus home game in Class Six, District One Nov. 2 against Hazelwood Central, St. Louis University High, Francis Howell Central or Pattonville.
Hazelwood West clinched a share of the Suburban XII North Oct. 19 with a win over visiting McCluer North, snapping the Stars’ six-game winning streak. Senior Darius Cooper scored 28 of the Wildcats’ 31 points by throwing for three touch-down passes and rushing for another. The Wildcats scored 14 unanswered fourth-quarter points to seal the win Cooper also rushed for two second-half touchdowns Oct. 11 in Cedar Hill as the Wildcats overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to defeat Northwest 14-10.
LUTHERAN NORTH visits Class Five, District Three Chaminade (6-2) Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Lutheran North won their third straight Metro League title Oct. 10 with a 49-6 win at Class Three, District Three John Burroughs called at halftime by rain darkness and a late start (no lights at Burroughs). Sophomore Brian Brown threw three touchdown passes and ran for another while sophomore Ali Wills ran for two more. On Oct. 18, a home win over Class Four, District One Farmington (38-10), senior Jalen Head ran for two touchdowns.
Prior to the game against Farmington, Cardinal Ritter, which is in the same class and district as Lutheran North (Class Two. District Two), forfeited their seven wins, including week two against Lutheran North, forfeited their last two games and cancelled their season in dropping from the top seed. Cardinal Ritter used an ineligible player in week one prompting the dismissal of the coach and all his assistants So Lutheran North (now 7-0) will the top seed, have a first-round bye and will play the Nov.8 district semifinal.
McCLUER NORTH (3-1, 6-2) hosts Hazelwood Central (1-3, 3-5) Saturday at 12 noon seeking a possible win to secure a home game in Class Five, District Three Semifinal Nov. 9 against Webster Groves, Parkway West or Ritenour. Senior Angelo Butts rushed for two touchdowns at Hazelwood West, and scored two more and the Stars’ 36-0 shutout Oct. 11 at Oakville while senior Travon Springfield rushed for three touchdowns at Oakville.
McCLUER (2-2, 6-2) hosts Riverview Gardens (0-4, 0-8) Saturday and McCluer, currently the top seed in Class Four, District Two, will seal it with a win and could host Riverview, Bishop DuBourg or Soldan International Studies Nov. 2. The Comets won their first home game Oct. 12 in defeating Seckman 26-7 as senior Jaylen Gardner threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns. The Comets remain unbeaten or the road winning 34-24 Oct. 19 at Hazelwood East.
TRINITY CATHOLIC ran their win streak to five Oct. 12 with a 36-6 win over Clyde C. Miller Career Academy at the former Southwest High, now used by St. Louis Central Visual and Performing Arts and Cleveland Naval Junior ROTC. That win streak ended there as the 5-3 Titans lost 21-16 at home Oct. 18 to Class Six, District One St. University High (4-4). Trinity is off this week and will host a first round Class Three, District Three game Nov. 1 against Normandy or Miller Career. HAZELWOOD CENTRAL snapped a four game losing streak with home wins over 1-7 Ritenour, 47-0 and Riverview Gardens 55-14. Senior Kayden Jackson Threw six touchdown passes in the last two games.
