After season-opening losses to John F. Kennedy (10-7) and St. Dominic (13-6) Trinity Catholic responded by rolling over Bishop DuBourg (41-10), Imagine College Prep (52-6), Westminster Christian Academy (39-7) and Lutheran-St. Charles County (50-0) and has outscored their first six opponents 195-46 including a 182-23 margin the last four games.
Now the last four weeks will be a test to 4-2 Trinity as they will play 3-3 St. Mary’s, 3-3 Lutheran North, 4-2 McCluer South-Berkeley and 6-1 Cardinal Ritter College Prep the next four weeks. But Sr. Karl Mary Winkelmann, SSND, Trinity Superintendent and President, said “this time we’ll be ready.” That starts Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. when the Titans visit St. Mary’s in South St. Louis.
Trinity credits defensive success to defensive coordinator Mike Lapse, according to head coach Leon Hite, offensive coordinator Keith Beckham and junior varsity coach Corey Ballard. All of the coaches except Hite are Trinity graduates, said Hite. “Our defense is why we’re 4-2, “ Beckham said crediting Lapse.
Despite the fact that Trinity (2-2 Archdiocesan Athletic Association) is coming off a shutout rout of Lutheran-SC and St. Mary’s (3-2 AAA) was whitewashed by Cardinal Ritter St. Mary’s “ is tough every time,” said Beckham. Hite said “We’re going to be up for that (the St. Mary’s) game” especially after St. Mary’s rallied in the fourth quarter last year in a 28-24 Dragon win which they made four extra points while the Titans missed four.
In the last two games for the Titans, Toma Peebles ran for six touchdowns and passed for another.
ALL OTHER GAMES ARE SATURDAY. At 1 p.m. in the Suburban North McCluer North hosts Riverview Gardens, Hazelwood Central hosts McCluer, Hazelwood West hosts Pattonville (4-2 overall and conference) and Hazelwood East visits Ritenour (4-2, 1-2 SNC). Also at 1 p.m. McCluer South-Berkeley visits
Normandy in the Suburban East Conference finale for both while at 2 p.m. Lutheran North host Mary Institute-Country Day School in an ABC League finale for both.
McCLUER NORTH, like Trinity, is on a four-game winning streak. After losing the opener at Jefferson City the Stars (4-1, 3-0 Suburban North) have wins over McCluer, Pattonville, Lafayette and Hazelwood East, with a week off between games against Lafayette and East, in which Galen Brown scored four touchdowns against East. “We still got a long way to go,” said North head coach Jim Schottmueller but “the attitude is good and the kids are working hard.”
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL is 6-0, 3-0 in the Suburban North and their wining streak, dating back to their Class Six title run of last year, is now at 12 games. After another close game, 21-14 over Hazelwood East in what Central head coach Rich Nixon says is “a rivalry game,” the Hawks are coming off a 41-0 rout at Riverview Gardens’ Meyerkord Field. Jamal Flowers completed 11 out of 22 passes against Riverview for 234 yards and three touchdowns.
LUTHERAN NORTH is 3-3, 2-2 in the ABC League with wins over Westminster Christian, Lutheran South and Principia while losing to Clayton, Priory and John Burroughs. McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY is 4-2, 2-2 in the Suburban East with wins over Carnahan, NJROTC, Affton and Jennings and losses to Ladue and Clayton.
HAZELWOOD EAST, HAZELWOOD WEST, McCLUER and RIVERVIEW GARDENS are each 1-5 overall. In the Suburban North East, McCluer and Riverview are each 1-3 while West is 1-2. East and McCluer defeated West, Riverview won in double overtime over Ritenour and West defeated Riverview. Normandy — a team that will compete against East, McCluer and Riverview in Class Five, District Three — is also 1-5 overall and is 1-3 in the Suburban East with their only win coming against Affton.
