Missouri State High School Activities Association member high schools begin interscholastic competition Monday, Aug. 20, in three girls sports; Golf, Softball, Tennis.

Cross Country, Boys Soccer, Girls Volleyball and Boys Swimming open Aug. 27. Football, which opens Aug. 30, will be previewed in the next edition of The Independent News.

One event that opens Monday, which is an annual event, is the Parkway Softball Tournament and is scheduled to end Aug 22. Schools like Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood West, Incarnate Word, Pattonville, Ritenour and the four Parkway School District high schools (Central, North, South and West) have been playing at Ballwin Athletic Association and/or Manchester Athletic Association in the three-day event. Rockwood-Marquette won the tournament last year while Hazelwood West won two years ago beating runner-up Hazelwood Central in the championship game.

Teams, pairings, dates and sites for this year’s tournament were not available when The Independent News went to press. Hot weather may delay the start the tournament as temperatures are forecasted to remain in the mid-90s for several days.

Last year Ritenour, Suburban North Conference champion, and Incarnate Word Academy, Metro Women’s Athletic Association Division I champions, were assigned to Class Four, District Six. Ritenour lost to Parkway Central while Incarnate, tourney host, defeated Parkway Central in the final. Hazelwood Central, a winner in Class Four, District Seven, and Incarnate Word both lost in the Class Four Sectional Round.

GIRLS TENNIS–The top event in the Suburban North Conference is the mid-season league tournament, which will take place Sept. 14-15 at Riverview Gardens High School. Last year McCluer North was a Class Two team regional qualifier losing to eventual state champion St. Joseph’s Academy.

CROSS COUNTRY–The majority of teams opens Aug. 31 at the First Capitol Invitational in St. Charles at McNair Park or Sept. 1 at Granite City, Ill., or at the Washington University Invitational at Forest Park, St. Louis. The Annual Hazelwood Central-Paul Enke Invitational will take place Sept 15 at Sioux Passage Park, the Hazelwood West Invitational will be held Sept. 21 at Koch Park and the Hazelwood East Invitational will be held Sept. 29 at East. Mary Goldkamp, who took seventh in Class Four Girls State last year, has graduated from McCluer North.

BOYS SOCCER–According to a Hazelwood West schedule the NORCO Tournament is scheduled to take place Aug.28-31. The location of the tournament, teams and parings were not available at press time. Also the Hazelwood West Wildcat Classic will take place Sept. 18-22.

Hazelwood West, Suburban North Conference champions, and Trinity Catholic, Archdiocesan Athletic Association champions, lost in district finals. Hazelwood Central — who defeated West in the Class Three, District Two finals — lost to eventual state runner up Lafayette in the Class Three Quarterfinals. John Burroughs — who defeated Trinity in the Class One, District finals — was second in Class One State .

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — The Hazelwood Volleyfest, to be held Oct. 5-6 at Hazelwood Central is the only tournament to be hosted by an area Suburban North Conference school, before district play. After four years of competing in the Class Four State Tournament, including three straight state titles, Incarnate Word was derailed last year in District Five by Parkway West, who defeated Hazelwood West in the Sectional round on their way to a fourth-place finish in Class Four State. Trinity Catholic won Class Three, District Five before losing to Visitation in the Sectional.

BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING — Participants on Suburban North Conference teams have from Aug. 27 to Nov. 1 (SNC Tournament finals in Bridgeton) to qualify for state, Nov. 9-10 at St. Peters.
