After thunderstorm (and tornado warning)-shortened losses on Aug. 30 McCluer North and Hazelwood West each rebounds to win three straight while McCluer, after three straight road wins, lost at home Sept. 21 to McCluer North, 28-6, to open Suburban Conference, XII North Division play.
Meanwhile, Trinity Catholic, after being outscored 57-6 in losses to Lutheran North (25-6) and East St. Louis (32-0), Outscored two Archdiocesan Athletic Association Division II opponents 126-6 in wins over Bishop DuBourg (90-6) and O’Fallon (Living Word) Christian (36-6). Lutheran North sandwiches two win around a 27-13 loss to Cardinal Ritter,
Hazelwood East split their last two games to go 2-2, Hazelwood Central is 1-3 after two straight losses and Riverview Gardens is 0-4 after losing to Hazelwood East 40-14.
In Suburban XII North games this Saturday, Sept. 28, McCluer hosts Hazelwood West and McCluer North hosts Riverview Gardens in 12 noon games while at 1 p.m. Hazelwood East hosts Hazelwood Central. On Oct. 5, Hazelwood Central hosts McCluer and McCluer North hosts Hazelwood East in 12 noon games while at 1 p.m. Hazelwood West visits Riverview Gardens.
Trinity Catholic, in AAA Division II action at 7 p.m., visits 3-1 Duchesne Friday, Sept. 27 then returns home Oct. 4 against currently 4-0 Lutheran St. Charles County to close the AAA D-II schedule. Lutheran North is home for a pair of 7 p.m. Metro League games, Friday against 0-4 Lutheran South and Oct. 4 against currently 3-1 Mary Institute Country Day School.
McCLUER NORTH — The Stars outscored their first four opponents 128-19 to lead the Suburban XII North. After trailing 6-0 to McCluer at halftime Oct. 21, the Stars scored 28 unanswered second-half points, of which 20 came in the third quarter. Senior Travon Springfield dominated the third quarter against the Comets by rushing for three touchdowns.
Winning 58-6 over 0-4 Parkway South began Sept. 13 but it ended Sept. 14 due to apparent weather issues. The Stars, with 30 second-quarter point and a rolling second-half clock, ran for 330 yards and five touchdowns (three in the second quarter) and 251 passing yards and four touchdowns Senior Angelo Butts ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns while passing for 154 yards and two more scored. Springfield’s 145 rushing yards and Jason Easely’s 97 passing yards, each resulted in two touchdowns.
HAZELWOOD WEST — The Wildcat’s second consecutive win over Hazelwood Central, 26-19 at West on Sept. 21, is the first win by any Suburban XII North team over Hazelwood Central. The Wildcats also won Sept. 13 with a 31-0 home shutout of Mehlville (1-3).
McCLUER outscored opponents 104-0 through the end of the first half of their Sept. 21 home loss to McCluer North. The Comets were coming off their third straight road shutout, 42-0 Sept. 13 at Oakville. In the last two games, the Comets scored 40 of the 48 points in the first half.
Senior Jaylen Gardner, who came to McCluer after McCluer South-Berkeley became STEAM Academy, was a first quarter producer. Gardner ran for two touchdowns against Oakville while passing for a touchdown against Oakville and McCluer North.
TRINITY CATHOLIC — The Titans demolition Sept. 13 at Bishop DuBourg took less than three quarters to complete and the fourth quarter never took place. The home shutout of Living Word Christian on Sept.20 came two days after the removal of Terrance Curry as the Titans head coach, according to media reports.
In the win at DuBourg Freshman Chris Cotton threw for 117 yards and four touchdowns senior James Frenchie, Junior Thomas Mimes and senior Luke Wilson each scored two touchdowns. Trinity ran for 256 yards and seven touchdowns against the Cavaliers. Against Christian, five Titans each scored a touchdown, four of them rushing on 257 yards in 25 carries.
LUTHERAN NORTH split a pair of games against AAA teams, winning at home 25-6 Aug. 31 against Trinity while losing to Cardinal Ritter Sept. 7 in East St. Louis. The Crusaders won their Sept. 21 Metro League opener, 63-14, at Westminster Christian Academy. In the win over Trinity sophomore Ali Wells ran for two fourth quarter touchdowns totaling 133 yards while in the win at Westminster sophomore Brian Brown ran for four touchdowns and passes for two more, all in the first half.
