In 2008, the MSLA wet to a two-division format and this year Division Two is now the Show Me Cup. Hazelwood (Central) won the first Show Me Cup nearly two weeks ago, the second MSLA championship in Boys Lacrosse history. Hazelwood, which won Division II in 2011, won the two titles at Lindenwood University’s Harlan C. Hunter Stadium — used for Football, Soccer, Field Hockey and Lacrosse.
Unlike the 2011 Division II title, which the Hawks won in overtime, the outcome of the Show Me Cup title-game win over Kirkwood, 17-5 on May 27, took only 53 seconds for sophomore Tommy Randazzo scored the first of nine goals. Randazzo scored the first four Hawk goals in an 8:32 period of the first quarter as Hazelwood took a 6-1 lead before the start of the second quarter.
Randazzo added two more in a four-goal second quarter as the Hawks led 10-3 at halftime, added two more in the third quarter and one more in the fourth as Hazelwood added seven more in the second half including four in the fourth quarter.Senior Nick Jambga scored four goals and added three assists. Two of Jambga’s goals took place in the fourth quarter.
Hazelwood and Kirkwood are Suburban XII Conference rivals and Hazelwood defeated Kirkwood 15-7 April 4 at St. Ferdinand Park. Jambga, which had four assists, seniors Patrick Kennedy and Mike Bahan each scored three goals while senior goalkeeper Logan Humphrey had 12 saves.
Hazelwood won their Show Me Cup semifinal game 12-6 over Clayton May 24 at Lindenwood’s Hunter Stadium. Clayton scored three third-quarter goals and the fourth quarter started with a 6-6 tie. Hazelwood outscored Clayton 6-0 in the fourth quarter to ensure their first return to the championship game since 2011.
Jambga scored four goals on 10 shots, Randazzo, with 19 shots, and junior Blake Terry each scored three goals, Kennedy had five assists and Humphrey had 10 saves. Leading Clayton was Trystan Goette, with four goals, and Riley McDermott, with 13 saves. In a May 27 game at St. Ferdinand Park, Hazelwood defeated Clayton 12-7 as Terry scored five goals and Randazzo added four and could have been more lopsided if it were not for 25 Clayton saves by McDermott
Hazelwood opened the Show Me Cup Tournament with a first-round bye as the number one seed then won a 15-7 quarterfinal over Ladue May 18 at St. Ferdinand Park. Hazelwood scored four goals in the first quarter and added five in the second quarter before adding six in the second half. Randazzo scored five goals on 15 shots, Jambga had four assists and Humphrey had 10 saves in the only meeting of the year.
Overall Hazelwood finished 2017 with a 13-3 record and 2-1 in the Suburban XII. The Hawks finished second to Webster Groves in the Suburban XII as the Statesmen defeated the Hawks 15-7 on May 9 at St. Ferdinand Park. Had Hazelwood defeated Webster the Hawks would have been competing in the MSLA state tournament, won by Mary Institute-Country Day School, for the fourth consecutive year.
Randazzo led the Hawks with 44 goals and Jambga had 35 assists while Humphrey had 153 saves and the saves do not include the Show Me Cup championship game.
