Ice And Snow Storm Affects Winter College and Prep Sports

BY JIM WIENERS

High School and College sports teams became apparent victims of a winter storm on Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

The writer of this article is not aware of how many sports events were called off and was not able to leave the writer’s home, in St. Peters. So this writer is unaware of any power outages. The only information received on the internet was that the University of Missouri-St. Louis was without power and was not able and that two Men’s and two Women’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Basketball games were cancelled.

Last July UMSL had severe thunderstorm damage to the roof of the Mark Twain Building and that the main gymnasium floor was severely damaged. It was repaired during the fall forcing the Women’s Volleyball team to play at McCluer South-Berkeley High. And when the floor was replaced in time for Basketball UMSL was going to name the new floor “Chuck Smith Court” in honor of the first Men’s Basketball coach but the dedication is called off until further notice because of the winter storms.

UMSL was to play two Indiana Colleges — Indianapolis, St. Joseph’s — last weekend and the date to reschedule these GLVC games were not available according to the UMSL sports website. Also, St. Louis Christian College, according to their website, rescheduled their Men’s Basketball game against Central Christian College of the Bible from last Friday to Dec. 11 due to winter storms and power outages.

HIGHLIGHTS BEFORE WINTER STORM — Hazelwood Central Boys Basketball opened the season with a loss to Troy, the same team that dealt the Hawks their first loss in 2005-06 then won two games in the Vianney Tournament, over Oakville High and Westminster Christian Academy.

McCluer South-Berkeley Boys Basketball won a pair of games at McKendree College, Lebanon, Ill., while the Girls Basketball team won their first three games including the season-opener at home, Nov. 20 against Suburban East Conference rival Jennings.

Incarnate Word Academy Girls Basketball began the season in the same place that the Red Knights started last year in the Class Five State Championship season, in Quincy, Ill. Playing four games in two days, Nov. 24-25, Incarnate Word defeated East St. Louis, Ill., Rock Island, Ill., and Chicago-John Hope while losing to Bolingbrook, Ill.
St. Louis Christian College Men’s Basketball is off to a 7-2 start, prior to Dec. 5. The University of Missouri-St. Louis Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams are each off to a 2-2 start.
