Hazelwood West Swimming Relays,
McCluer Freestyler State Bound
By Jim Weiners
Three Hazelwood West Boys Swimming Relay Teams and McCluer senior Freestyle swimmer Devon Tallent are heading to the Missouri State High School Activities Association champions Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 14-16, at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.
Hazelwood West Relay teams — 200-Yard Medley Relay, 200-Yard Freestyle Relay and 400-yard Freestyle Relay — will compete in the Class Two preliminaries Friday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. A top 16 finish will advance any or all of the relay teams to Saturday’s 3 p.m. finals. A top eight finish assures receiving medals and the coach of the State Championship team will hand out the medals.
HAZELWOOD WEST’S MEDLEY RELAY and 400 Freestyle Relay qualified for state in an Oct. 23 home dual meet against Wentzville-Timberland. The Medley Relay swam their best time of 2:01.45 while the 400 Freestyle Relay swam their best time of 3:53.32. The 200 Freestyle Relay qualified for state with their best performance of 1:43.79 in a Sept. 19 home dual against Oakville. All three Relays barely made the top 32.
Tallent will compete in Class One Thursday, 12:30 in the 200-Yard and 500-Yard Freestyle preliminaries. If Tallent finished in the top 16 in either or both of his events then the McCluer Senior will return Friday for the 10 a.m. finals. A top eight finish guarantees a medal or two and if Tallent wins then his coach (do not have the name) could present him with a medal.
Tallent qualified foe state in the 200-Yard Freestyle in a Sept. 12 dual meet against Francis Howell North. At STEAM Academy at McCluer South-Berkeley, he swam the 200 Freestyle in 1:52.5. It appeared as if Tallent was not going to qualify according to Direct Athletics. However, when the Missouri State High School Activities Association had their Psych Sheet Review Period on Nov.10 Tallent is 23rd ranked.
Tallent had four qualifying times in the 500-Yard Freestyle but saved his best until Oct. 24 at STEAM Academy-MSB when he swam the 500 in 5:02.75 and is ranked 15th by the MSHSAA.
