High School Football Update

Hazelwood Central, Trinity Football Rolling To 5-0 Starts

By Jim Wieners

Starting the High School Football season 5-0 is nothing new for Hazelwood Central as the Hawks have been doing that very often since Hazelwood High became Hazelwood Central in the fall of 1974.

Starting Football 5-0 at Trinity Catholic, since its opening in the fall of 2003 as a result of the St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy-Rosary merger, is the first time in school history.

Hazelwood Central, a Class Six High School, have outscored five opponents 195-46, a per-game average of 39-9.2. Trinity Catholic, a Class Two High School, have outscored their opponents 284-25, a 56.8-5 per-game average.

Hazelwood Central began its quest for their third straight Suburban XII Conference North Division title, their fifth conference title overall including the former Suburban North Conference, by rolling over two of their biggest rivals, Hazelwood East 41-12 on Sept. 10 and McCluer North 66-13 on Sept. 17. Senior quarterback Antonio Triplett, Jr., threw two touchdown passes against Hazelwood East and three touchdown passes against McCluer North while running for a touchdown against East and North. Junior running back Raphael Bell rushed for two touchdowns against McCluer North.

Trinity Catholic, defending Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small Division Champions have four wins against AAA foes, Large and Small Division and that includes smashing over a pair of 0-5 AAA Small teams, O’Fallon Christian 62-6 Sept. 9 and Bishop DuBourg 68-6 played Sept. 17 on the turf of St. Mary’s due to Sept. 16 rain and a soggy DuBourg grass.

Against Christian sophomore quarterback Isaiah Williams rushed for three touchdowns and threw for three more while sophomore running back Alphonzo Andrews rushed for a pair of touchdowns and caught a scoring pass. Against DuBourg Williams threw for four first half touchdowns, three in the first half, Andrews, sophomore wide receiver Marcus Washington and freshman running back Reggie Love each scored two touchdowns.

Hazelwood Central is on the road the next two weeks as the Hawks visit Suburban XII North rival McCluer Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. and former Suburban North rival Pattonville in a Sept. 30, 7 p.m. non conference game. Trinity plays their final home game and final AAA Small game Friday, Sept. 23, 7 p.m. against Lutheran St. Charles County, 4-1 (losing only to Columbia, Father Tolton Catholic) and led by junior Bryce French who has 14 touchdowns. Trinity is off the following week after John F. Kennedy, which reportedly announced Sept. 16 that they will close at the end of the school year, dropped football before the season starts
