Hazelwood Central’s Jamison Wins State Wrestling 170-Pound Championship

Hazelwood Central senior wrestler Khial Jamison ended his prep career Feb. 22 when he won the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class Four 170-pound championship.

Jamison (39-2) becomes the first Hazelwood Central wrestler to win a state title since 2002 when Tony Doerr won the Class 4A 152-pound title. Jamison is the 11th Hazelwood Central state championship wrestler since 1982. Combining the history of Hazelwood High and Hazelwood Central High Jamison is the 25th Hawk to win a state wrestling title since 1955, and Hazelwood High had 14 state championship wrestlers (1955-1974).

At the Class Four State Championships at Mizzou Arena, Columbia (University of Missouri) Jamison won two to matches by fall — Round One in 3:29 over Zach Seiler, Eureka, and in the Semifinal in 4:38 over Rourke Penn, Fort Zumwalt West — and had a 12-4 major decision in a Quarterfinal match over Juan Castaneds, Lee’s Summit. Jamison won the State Championship match in a 4-2 decision over Dustin Gray, Wentzville-Timberland, avenging a loss in in the District Two Championship match, Feb. 22 at Ritenour High’s Costilow Fieldhouse as Gray won by a fall in 2:55. Also in District Two Jamison secured a berth in the state championships by fall, in 5:59, over Shaquan Whitaker, Pattonville, in Round One, a 17-0 Quarterfinal Technical Fall over Gorge Jara, Ritenour.

TRAVON BUTLER, McCluer North junior, improved on his third place finish last year with a State Runner Up finish Feb. 22 at 220. Butler (52-3) got to the State   in a Round One fall, Championship match by defeating Corey 2:57, over Ali’l Loyola, Lee’s Summit, in a 7-0 Quarterfinal decision and over Keyen Braughton, Liberty, in an 11-2 semifinal major decision.

DANIEL VAUGHN, Hazelwood West senior, had a 45-1 season but ended up taking third place at 285. Vaughn’s only loss was in the Semifinals in an overtime 3-2 ultimate tie breaker to eventual runner up Xyah Ra, Nixa. Vaughn rebounded by winning in the Consolation Semifinals 3-0 over Danny Williams, Wentzville-Timberland and the Third-Place Match 6-5 over Tim Gant, CBC, a state champion last  year at 220.

AMONG OTHER CLASS FOUR STATE MEDALLISTS Tyron Welch, Ritenour, 160 State Runner Up, Raamish Saeed, Hazelwood West, sixth at 195, and Jaylen Gomilla, Hazelwood Central, sixth at 106. IN CLASS THREE, Kamerun Williams, McCluer, took fifth at 126. IN CLASS TWO, two McCluer South-Berkeley wrestlers medalled as John Williams took third at 138 and Darion Young was sixth at 113.

GIRLS SWIMMING — JESSICA NICHOLS, Hazelwood West sophomore, took eighth place in the 50-Yard Freestyle and 15th place in the 100-Yard Freestyle, Feb. 21-22 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex. In the 50 Freestyle Nichols qualified for the championships with a 24.62-second effort and in the championship round swam in 24.87 seconds. In the 100 Freestyle she managed to qualify for the consolation round with a 54.27-second effort and in the consolation round she swam in 54.57 seconds.
