IWA, MICDS Meet Again In State

Incarnate Word Academy and Mary Institute Country Day School rarely met in Girls Basketball until the 2012-2013 season.

Since IWA moved to Class Four the Red Knights and MICDS have met frequently, especially in state where the Red Knights have rolled over the Rams. After the Red Knights won in the 2013 and 2014 Sectionals IWA and MICDS met for the 2015 State Championship and the Red Knights scored a 60-27 rout. the seventh state title overall for IWA and their fifth in the last six years including three in a row. It was the first title game ever played by MICDS

Now they meet again, this time Friday, March 18 in the Class Four State Semifinals as the 25-4 Red Knights and 24-4 Rams meet approximately 2:30 at Mizzou Arena, Columbia, on the University of Missouri campus. It will be Incarnate Word’s 15 state semifinal appearance since 1993 but it also the seventh consecutive year the Red Knights have made their trip to Mizzou.

That game will proceed the scheduled 4:15 game between 24-5 Owensville — which like MICDS, is in their second semifinal game — and 29-0 Benton, in their fifth semifinal appearance since 1991, was an undefeated state champion in 2007. The winners play Saturday, March 19, 6:20 p.m. for the Class Four State title while the losers meet earlier that same day, 11 a.m., for third place.

This will be the third time IWA and MICDS meet this season. IWA won 43-37 Jan. 12 at MICDS and the Red Knights defeated the Rams 63-42 Feb. 6 at Webster Groves to win their fourth straight Webster Winter Challenge title.

Incarnate Word had rolled over Soldan International Studies 54-18 and Jennings 69-21 to win Class Four District Six at Normandy Viking Hall. Against Soldan International Studies Rickie Woltman scored 17 points, Nakayla Jackson-Morris scored 11 Grace Fortman added 10 before fouling out and Kiki Britzman blocked six shots.

Against Jennings Woltman had 14 points, Sonya Morris had 13 points and four steals, Abbey Hoff had 11 points and five assists and Britzman has nine rebounds.

Incarnate Word continued their steamroll to Mizzou Arena with a 67-27 Sectional win over Clyde C. Miller Career Academy March 8 at Parkway West. It was the second year in a row that   IWA rolled over Miller in a Sectional round game. Incarnate led 33-12 at halftime and blew the game more wide open with a 27-10 third quarter to make the score 60-12 as the mercy rule went into effect in the fourth quarter.

Morris scored 16 points, had six assists and five steals to lead Incarnate.Katie Lacefield added 14 points while Woltman pulled down reven rebounds and blocked five shots.

IWA rolled 61-41 in the March 12 Quarterfinal game over St. Charles High at Francis Howell High as the Red Knights go to Mizzou Arena on a 20-game winning streak after a 5-4 start. It is the second year in a row that Incarnate has defeated a City of St. Charles School District high school in the Quarterfinal as the Red Knights pummeled St. Charles West 69-30 in 2015 at Francis Howell.

Morris led Incarnate Word with 19 points, which included making six out of eight free throws. She also had eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Hoff scored 17 and Woltman added 16.

   MICDS, after a 1-2 start, has won 23 of their last 25 games with IWA dealing the Rams those two losses in that stretch. The Rams rolled to a Class Four, Distrtict Four title at Westminster Christian Academy defeating Visitation Academy 56-21 March 1 and Clayton High 67-25 March 4. MICDS rolled 65-45 over Notre Dame in St. Louis in the March 8 Sectional at Kirkwood High and defeated Dexter 58-44 in the March 12 Quarterfinal at the Farmington Civic Center.
