Representatives of the Florissant Police Department and the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District met this week with school officials of Ferguson-Florissant and Hazelwood School Districts, as well as officials of private and parochial schools within the City of Florissant, to discuss school security.
The meetings were held in the wake of the shootings at the elementary school in Newstown, CT. The objective of the meetings was to inform the police department of the schools’ plans to deal with intruder situations and for the police department to reassure the school officials how the police would respond.
The Florissant Police Department has increased patrols at all Florissant schools. Chief William Karabas believes that the cooperation and communication between the Florissant Police Department and area schools will provide the safest and healthiest learning environment possible for our children.
During the meeting with Hazelwood District officials, police and fire officials reviewed site plans of schools and talked about improving the ability for fire and police officials to identify specific classrooms from the outside of the building. They will also review all the HSD emergency operations procedures to provide feedback and ways to improve. Chief Bill Karabas stated that the safety and security of our children should remain our highest priority.
Police and fire officials are invited to share an update on our partnership at the HSD Board of Education meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on January 15 at 15955 New Halls Ferry Road in Florissant.
