Steve Price Named Superintendent of the Hazelwood School District
The Hazelwood School District Board of Education has hired of Steve Price as the new superintendent. Price was in town for a community reception on March 3 at the HSD Learning Center.
Price has more than 32 years of experience in education. He most recently served as the superintendent for seven years in Middletown City Schools before resigning last July. While in Middletown, Price helped improve achievement levels for all students, while reducing the achievement gap. He is also credited with decreasing the dropout rate, creating a unique mentoring program, upgrading facilities and creating a consortium on race and equity in schools.
“The most important decision our Board of Education will make is the selection of the most qualified candidate to lead our district,” said Mark Behlmann, president of the HSD Board of Education. “The board is confident that Price has the experience and vision to successfully lead our school district.”
Price currently serves as an adjunct professor for Miami University in Ohio and a consultant for the Pacific Educational Group. He previously served as superintendent for Perry Local Schools (Ohio). His background includes roles as
director of curriculum and instruction, elementary school principal, and fifth and sixth grade teacher.
Price earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from Miami University. The Ministerial Alliance of Middletown recently presented Price with the 2010 Drum Major for Peace, Justice and Equality Award. In addition, he earned the 2009 Merlin G. Pope Diversity Leadership Award from the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission. He has been active in the United Way, Rotary Club and American Heart Association.
Price and his wife, Anne, have three school-aged children who will attend Hazelwood schools once relocated to the District. Price will begin July 1, 2010.
Last fall, the HSD Board of Education hired an executive search firm, Ray and Associates, Inc., to conduct a national search for a superintendent. In addition, the search firm met with six different District stakeholder groups to record valuable feedback on the possible qualifications for the new superintendent. The stakeholder groups included students, staff members, principals, business and community leaders, PTA and key communicators, and parents and patrons.
