Hazelwood Central Boys Win 4th Consecutive Vianney Tournament

Hazelwood Central seems to like the week after Thanksgiving and the Hawks seem to like their visit to St. John Vianney High School, in Kirkwood.

For the fourth consecutive year Hazelwood Central won the Vianney Tournament. That includes beating the host team four times, the last three coming in the championship finals. Last Friday Hazelwood Central defeated Vianney, 56-45, on Nov. 28 Central defeated Oakville, 62-49, and the Hawks opened the tournament Nov. 26 with a 67-66 win over Suburban North Conference rival Riverview Gardens, a team that ended Central’s season last February. Central opened the season Nov. 20 at home with a 56-50 win over Troy-Buchanan.

In the season-opening win over Troy-Buchanan Chris Babbitt and Marcus Johnson each scored 11 points while in the first round tournament win over Riverview Josh Richards scored 13 points and Johnson added 12. In the semifinal win over Oakville Udoka Anuwgo scored 12 points while Johnson scored 11 while making six assists and in the win over Vianney Roshon Morris scored 10 of his 14 points from the free throw line while Babbitt added 13.

RIVERVIEW GARDENS rebounded from their tourney-opening loss to Hazelwood Central winning the consolation title — defeating Clayton, 51-37, and Westminster Christian Academy, 58-38. Albert Meeks scored 29 points against Hazelwood Central, scored 19 points while adding five assists and five steals against Clayton, and scored 32 points while pulling off seven steals against Westminster.

TRINTY CATHOLIC opened the second season with Kelly Thames as head coach the same way they opened last year, finishing second to Maplewood-Richmond Heights in the Valley Park Invitational. Last Saturday Trinity lost to Maplewood, 80-72, a year after MRH won 62-59. In getting to last weeks tournament championship game Trinity defeats two ABC League teams, 65-57 over Principia and 58-54 over Priory.

“One of these years we might get first place (in the Valley Park Invitational),” said Thames, whose Titans opened the season Nov. 21 with a 67-55
Archdiocesan Athletic Association loss at St. Mary’s. Marquise Hill scored 19 points against Principia, Corey Ballard, who had 13 rebounds against Principia, scored 19 to go with 11 rebounds against Priory and Ballard scored 29 points to go along with 18 rebounds against MRH.
