McCluer Boys Basketball Starts  ‘19-‘20 With 7 Wins, Webster Classic Title

    About 28 years ago McCluer High School Boys Basketball ended 1991 and began 1992 with an unbeaten record and was the only the only team to defeat 1992 Class 4A State Champion Riverview Gardens, which beat the Comets two times.

While McCluer celebrated the beginning of 1992 by winning the Normandy Holiday Tournament, this year’s Comet team is off to a 7-0 start as of Dec. 15 In addition, McCluer made their first appearance at the 20th Webster (Groves) Classic a championship winner.

At Webster Groves’ Roberts Gym on Dec. 14, the Comets came back from a 16-point deficit against the host Statesmen to win 49-48 in the Webster Classic Championship game. Senior Devon Barshow, who averages over 15 points a game, scored 17 against Webster including two free throws with nine seconds left to complete a 24-11 fourth-quarter Comet rally after trailing 37-25 through three quarters.

In the Dec. 13 semifinal at Roberts Gym, McCluer, which led Staley 24-18 at halftime after a 16-3 second quarter, rallied after a 35-30 deficit through three quarters to win 44-41, with a 14-6 fourth quarter. Senior Josh Donaldson and junior Anias Futrell each led McCluer with 10 points. McCluer began the Webster Classic, Dec. 12, with a 62-40 win over John Burroughs, with a 37-15 second half, as seniors Kameryn Hubbard and Jeremiah Johnson each scored 15 points.

McCluer began Suburban Red Pool play Dec 10 with a 57-19 rout of Parkway West in the M-4 Main Gym as  Barshow scored a game-high 19 points The Comets began December at St. Louis University High (Dec. 3) and, with 24 points from Barshow, won 76-58 over the Junior Billikens, coached by former Comet coach Erwin Clagget. McCluer won their season opener 57-50 at former Suburban North Conference rival Hazelwood West Nov. 26 with 18 points from Johnson and won 62-31 over Quincy Notre Dame inn the Quincy, Ill., Shootout as Barshow scored 18.

TRINITY CATHOLIC Boys are 4-1 and won their second consecutive St., John Vianney Invitational by defeating Whitfield 67-59 on Dec. 3, Hazelwood East 67-56 on Dec. 5 and Hazelwood Central 68-61 Dec. 6. After losing 82-42 to Whitehaven, Tenn. Dec. 8 in the Norm Stewart Classic at Mizzou Arena, Columbia, the Titan rebounded with a 71-41 win Dec. 13 in the Bob Strub Gym over visiting Duchesne, to open Archdiocesan Athletic Association Division II play.

   Seven-foot senior Ryan Kalkbrenner averages 16 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Kalkbrenner scored 23 points and pulled down 19 rebounds against Spanish Lake rival Hazelwood East. Senior Rashad Weekly averages 14.2 points per game scoring 20 point against Hazelwood Central and Duchesne. Senior Terrell Rush averages nearly 11 points per game including 15 against Hazelwood Central.

HAZELWOOD EAST Boys took a 3-1 record to Hazelwood Central Dec. 17, if weather permitted, after taking third place at the St., John Vianney Invitational and winning at home Dec. 10 over former Suburban North rival McCluer North 63-49. Sandwiched around the semifinal loss to Trinity the Spartans defeated former Suburban North rival Pattonville 53-57 on Dec.3 and won 65-55 in the Dec. 6 third-pace game over University City.

  NORTH COUNTY CHRISTIAN Boys took the consolation title at The Principia Honor Flight Classic. After losing 67-43 Dec. 10 to eventual champion Bourbon the Crusaders defeated Bayless 45-32 Dec. 12 and host Principia 48-46 Dec. 13. On Nov. 26, North County Christian won at home over Silex 54-43.
