Valentine’s Day Doesn’t Have to be Expensive; Many Local Options Available

BY NICHOLE BUTLER

Alfred Lord Tennyson once said, “Love is the only gold,” and how right he was! Throughout history, love has been portrayed as something that can not be bought. Love is priceless. On the contrary, love is the most affordable and the most extravagant gift to be given.

There is no reason to deplete your bank account to impress the one you love this Valentine’s Day.

The Florissant community provides several affordable opportunities to spoil that special someone, whether it is a first date, a serious relationship, or your spouse of 50 years.

A romantic dinner for two is a widely practiced celebration on and around every Feb. 14. Florissant has many romantic restaurants close to home that have a lot to offer. Perhaps a table reservation in front of the fireplace at Hendel’s or a candle lit dinner at Yacovelli’s would be the perfect evening out.

For a couple who often dines out, a night in may provide that extra element of romance. If you are a man that does not know how to tie an apron, much less boil water, then preparing even a simple meal may be a little daunting.

Although home cooking is the most affordable way to go, there are many restaurants in Florissant that offer meals for take-out. Create an intimate space by covering a small table with a deep red tablecloth and candles, then drive over to one of the many local Italian restaurants and pick up a large order of spaghetti and meatballs. One order is often enough to feed two!

After dinner, snuggle up on the sofa and watch something romantic together. Casablanca, Roman Holiday, and It Happened One Night are all classic romance films noteworthy of Valentine’s Day attention, and they can all be rented for free at the St. Louis County Florissant Valley Branch library.

Impress the one you love by presenting him or her with something you made.

Homemade cards and romantic coupon books are not only free alternatives; they are also fun and creative ways to express your emotions.

Other alternatives that show you really put a lot of time and energy into your gifts may consist of:  love letters and poems (you guys can scent them with your cologne too; a girl isn’t the only one how can sprit’s the pages!), a box wrapped in pretty paper containing all the mementos you have secretly kept throughout your relationship, or a gift certificate to your own private spa that’s redeemable whenever he or she chooses.

If you can’t resist and absolutely have to surprise the love of your life with something that sparkles or shines, Don Henefer Jewelers offers a variety of affordable jewelry for both men and women. Cuff links, ladies and gentlemen bracelets, earrings, and necklaces are all available in prices ranging from $39.00 to $75.00.

Red roses are the trademark for Valentine’s Day flowers, but if you are trying to limit the budget then a simple alternative is to purchase one single red rose and a balloon bouquet. Almost every florist offers balloon bouquets at a more affordable price than floral bouquets.

“There are many lower priced options to choose from,” Olga Mueller, owner of Flowers by Olga, says. “Balloon bouquets start at $29.99. Candy, flowers, and stuffed animals can also be included with an additional charge.” You can purchase a single long stemmed red rose in a glass vase for $9.99.

The most important thing to remember when planning your Valentine’s Day this year is that there is no reason to break the bank when trying to sweep that special someone off his or her feet. More than likely, you will be more self-conscience about how much money you spend (or don’t spend) than they will be. It really is the thought that counts. Have fun, get creative, and show them just how priceless love really is.
