Hawks Host CBC in Class 6 Football Quarterfinal

By Jim Wieners

Hazelwood Central continues their run for a third straight Class Six State Football title as they take a 17-game winning streak, dating back from last season, to the Nov. 13 quarterfinal game as the welcome the CBC Cadets and their 10-game winning streak to the Hawks’ house for a 1p.m. kickoff.

Since the beginning of the 2008 season Hazelwood Central has a 36-3 record and is 11-0 this season. CBC is 10-1 which includes the season-opening 36-34 home loss Aug. 27 to Fort Zumwalt West, who is hosting Francis Howell Nov. 12 in another Class Six quarterfinal.

The Hazelwood Central-CBC winner plays Lindbergh or DeSmet in the semifinal round. Lindbergh, with a win Nov. 12, will host the semifinal Nov. 19 while a DeSmet win Nov. 12 means the Central-CBC winner will host the semifinal (at CBC Nov. 19 or at Hazelwood Central Nov. 20).

“CBC is a well coached, disciplined team,” said Hazelwood Central head coach Rich Nixon after the Hawks whitewashed Rockwood-Marquette, 35-0 on Nov. 6. “It’s a matter or going back to the lab (otherwise known as the practice field). The kids are continuing to work and grow (and) what we have to focus is on improvement.”

CBC, like Hazelwood Central, has won six games by a touchdown or less. “They came back every time I saw them,” said McCluer North head coach Jim Schottmueller, including a 32-30 Cadet win over his Stars on a very cold Nov. 5 night at CBC. An 11-point fourth quarter, aided by a bad snap over the McCluer North punter which set up Antonio Brown’s second touchdown in the second half won it for the Cadets.

Hazelwood Central took care of business Nov. 6 in the first half of their shutout of Marquette and it was a 29-point second quarter that ended the Mustangs hope of their first-ever post-season win. Tra Brown opened the scoring with 6:52 left in the first quarter a 57-yard touchdown run 3 plays after the Hawks stopped the Mustangs on a fourth-down play deep in Hawks territory but the extra point attempt hit the right uprights. Brown started the second-quarter steam-roll with 8:32 left on a 51-yard run
