Hazelwood Central Football’s first half of the 2010 season could be described as “suicidal” but head coach Rich Nixon best described it otherwise.
“The first half of our schedule is ‘Murderers Row’” said the Hawk coach.
Week Three in the “Murderers Row” schedule for the Hawks is Sept. 11 when Columbia Rock Bridge visits Hazelwood Central for a 1 p.m. match-up of 2-0 teams. On Sept 17 Hawks will go to Oakville for a 7 p.m. game against Kirkwood, a team that took a 1-0 record to Seckman on Sept. 10. Rock Bridge has a win over cross-town rival Hickman and is coming off a 43-12 home rout of Riverview Gardens.
On Aug. 28 Hazelwood Central was able to overcome six turnovers which included a block punt and defeated visiting DeSmet, 20-19, in a battle of Class Six final four teams from last year. Jamal Flowers completed 11 out of 25 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns and Mike Jordan caught eight passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns including the game-winner with 3:03 left in the fourth quarter. “It’s a testament to a team battle,” Nixon said in overcoming six turnovers and a late 19-14 fourth-quarter deficit.
There were heroics late in the fourth quarter on Sept. 3 at Pattonville Stadium as the Hawks held off game-ready Pattonville, 14-7. Rocky Smith carried the ball 20 times for 110 yards and a seven-yard run up the middle for the game-winning touchdown with 2:54 left in the fourth quarter. Smith tied the game late in the second quarter on a touchdown reception from Flowers.
Week five of the Hawks’ “Murderers Row” schedule is a home game Sept. 25 against arch-rival Hazelwood East.
HAZELWOOD EAST hosts 1-1 Jefferson City Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. while HAZELWOOD WEST visits 1-1 Columbia-Hickman Sept 10 at 7 p.m. On Sept. 18 East hosts West at 1 p.m. East is looking for their first win for first-year head coach Brian Simmons after losses to Pattonville, 24-6, and DeSmet, 44-24, despite four Trey Hill touchdown passes including two to Jaylen Fulton. Hazelwood West is looking for their first win for first-year head coach Cordez Vaughn after losses to Belleville (Ill.) East, 33-7, and Harrisonville, 20-0, and Vaughn said the Wildcats “just got to play harder, try to get better every week.”
McCLUER NORTH hosts Pattonville in a 1 p.m. Suburban North Conference game Sept 11 and visits Lafayette Sept. 17 for a 7 p.m. game. McCLUER has a pair of 7 p.m. road games, at Maryville Sept. 10 and at Suburban North rival Ritenour, Sept. 17. On Sept. 3 McCluer North, with a pair of Galen Brown to Chris Jones touchdown passes, won 28-7 at McCluer, who was coming off a 51-14 loss to Webster Groves while North lost the first week at Jefferson City.
Maryville, Class Two State Champs last year, lost to Lawson and defeated Smithville.
