Hazelwoods Central, East Football Home Saturday, Clash on Oct. 3

After two weeks of Suburban XII (12) Conference North Division Football Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood East — both 2-0 Suburban XII North, 3-2 overall — appears to be on a collision course.

Central hosts East Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. but the two rivals have other rivarly games this Saturday (Sept. 26) at 1 p.m. Hazelwood Central hosts McCluer North, the last team to beat Central in a conference game (Oct 15, 2011-Suburban North Conference), while Hazelwood East host Hazelwood West in the 42nd meeting of these two schools that opened in 1974. That year also changed the name of Hazelwood High School to Hazelwood Central High School.

   HAZELWOOD CENTRAL — The Hawks won the Suburban XII North opener 53-6 at home Sept. 12 over McCluer by leading 32-0 in the first half, scoring 25 points in the second, before McCluer (0-2, 1-4)scored a touchdown. Then the Hawks added 21 more in the third quarter. Terran Hill threw three touchdown passes while DeMontez Clark ran for two more touchdowns.

One week later, Sept 19, Central won 30-8 at Riverview Gardens as the Hawks scored 28 first half points which included three Clark touchdowns. Cemtral added a third-quarter safety but Riverview Gardens (0-2, 0-5) denied a Hawk shutout by scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown with 11 seconds left.

   HAZELWOOD EAST — The Spartans won the Suburban XII North opener at home Sept 12 by defeating McCluer North 40-16. East trailed 16-0 after one quarter but the Spartans exploded in the second half by scoring 40 points. Jay Kirk had 168 yards rushing and three touchdowns while Kelvin Phillps kept the ball on the ground for 140 more yards and added a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

The following week, Sept 19 East was a 42-6 winner at McCluer as the Spartans scored the 21 points before McCluer got a touchdown in the first quarter. The Spartans scored 21 more in the second half inclding 15 in the third quarter. Phillps had 177 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

   TRINITY CATHOLIC has a pair of Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small Division games this week as the Titans first head to John F. Kennedy (0-2 AAA Small, 1-4) Friday (Sept. 25) at 4:30 in a football-soccer doubleheader. Trinity then returns home Oct. 2 for a 7 p.m game against Bishop DuBourg (1-2, 1-4 before playing St. Mary’s). Trinity improved to 2-0 in the AAA Small, 4-1 overall by dealing Lutheran St. Charles County (2-1, 4-1) their first loss (33-27 Sept. 11 at Lutheran) then completed a sweep over St. Charles County opposition a last-minute non-conference victory, 39-35 at home Sept. 18, over St. Charles High (2-3, 0-3 Gateway Athletic Conference North Division).

The two games against Lutheran-St. Charles County and St. Charles High were see-saw affairs but it was freshman quarterback Isaiah Williams who won both games for Trinity. Williams rushed for 144 yards including a 78-yard touchdown run with 7:47 left in the fourth quarter to defeat Lutheran St. Charles County and a week later Williams ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns including a 44-yarder with 15 seconds left dealing St. Charles High their third straight heartbreaking loss.

Williams completed 10 passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns against Lutheran St. Charles County then completed 16 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns against St. Charles High. Williams primary target was freshman wide receiver Marcus Washington, who caught two touchdown passes against Lutheran-St. Charles County and 11 passes for 128 yards a two touchdowns against St. Charles High.

McCLUER NORTH returns home Oct. 3 for a 1 p.m game against Riverview Gardens. McCluer North (1-1 Suburban XII North, 1-4) won their first game of the season, 40-8 at Hazelwood West Sept. 19, as Vernell Rue passed for four touchdowns including three to Harry Ballard while Urics King ran for two more scores. Rue had two touchdown passes in the loss at Hazelwood East.

   HAZELWOOD WEST  visits McCluer Oct. 3, 1 p.m., their second straght road game. Hazelwood West (1-1, 2-3) defeated visiting Riverview Gardens 46-16 on Sept. 12 as Cortez Davis scored two third-quarter touchdowns by recovering two of three three James Jennette end-zone, touchdown-scoring blocked punts. That helped overcame a 16-0 first-quarter deficit. Riverview Gardens hosts McCluer Saturday at 1 p.m.
