MoDOT Installs Signals on N. Lindbergh

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT)  last week installed flashing yellow left turn signals along Lindbergh Boulevard (Route 67) at Chez Paree, Manresa and Washington/Charbonier in the cities of Hazelwood and Florissant.

These left turn signals use a flashing yellow arrow, pointed left, instead of a solid green signal, to indicate that drivers may make a yielding left turn.  Since drivers tend to associate “green” with “go”, and “yellow” with “caution”, studies have shown that drivers more easily understand the flashing yellow arrow.

The new signals will use red arrows as well.  The current signs will be replaced with a new sign “Left Turn Yield on Flashing Arrow.” During those periods of heavier traffic, however, drivers will have a green arrow, allowing them to make a protected left turn.

MoDOT has used these signals since 2006 on Olive Boulevard (Route 340) in Creve Coeur at the intersections of Mason, Ross/Questover, and Barnes West/Heritage Place.  The flashing yellow left turn signals were also installed in 2009 on the I-70 westbound exit ramp at Route K/Route M in St. Charles.

Drivers can find out more about the flashing yellow arrow left-turn signals and watch a video showing drivers using an intersection with flashing yellow arrow left-turn signals at the MoDOT website:   www.modot.org/stlouis/links/flashingyellowarrows.htm.
