Hazelwood’s White Birch Bay Aquatic Center Opening Still On Hold

Hazelwood City and  Parks and Recreation officials are estimating  it may take up to two weeks before the city’s White Birch Bay Aquatic Center will reopen.

A broken underground pipe forced the cancellation of the Memorial Day weekend opening of the water park. This will be the second full season for the new regional attraction.

“We know many residents were disappointed that the Aquatic Center was not open for the holiday weekend, but these circumstances were beyond our control,” said Parks and Recreation Superintendent Doug Littlefield.

Last Friday, as the pool basins were being filled up with water in preparation of the opeing on May 29, a pipe broke causing problems with keeping the water level where they needed to be, said Littlefield.

As of Tuesday, June 1, workers were still trying to fix the problem.

The pool basins had been painted and the 360-degree bubble slide was in place in anticipation of the opening originally set  for Friday May 29.  Located in White Birch Park at 1186 Teson Road, this facility was ranked as one of the “Top Ten” water parks in the St. Louis area by “GO! Magazine.”

Hazelwood officials had joined  efforts by the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission to encourage local residents to “Be a Tourist in Your Own Town.”  They were inviting people to Discover Hazelwood and take advantage of all the dining, entertainment and shopping it has to offer.

Since opening in July 2008, Hazelwood’s $5.7 million dollar Aquatic Center has

among its many features a 360-degree bubble slide made in Sweden, which is the first-of-its-kind being used in the Midwest. Other amenities include the following:

White Birch Bay is available for private celebrations such as birthday parties, anniversaries, family reunions and employee appreciation events.  (Teen parties are prohibited.)  A variety of party packages are available for groups up to 225 guests
