Sorry Folks, if I Don’t Take Fishing Serious

By Randy Gardner

It is really funny how I touched a nerve with alot of people with last week’s  column about fishing or my lack of it.

I had some people come up and say that I don’t like fishing  because I don’t take it seriously enough and give it a chance. However, I had others say that they feel the same pain as I do with just not getting it.

Honestly, as  I always say, to each their own. Think about it. If we all liked the same thing,  we would all be married to the same type woman and the golf courses would be packed.  So for all of you fisherman, I will stay out of your way.

Frustrations Today Maybe Memories Tomorrow

The second part of my columm was all about the frustration of watching the young  ones play ball. I heard maybe one of the best responses to this ever. This is one that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

The person said that this  frustration right now will be the memories that I will look back on later in  life and wish that I could have back, so live in the moment and enjoy it.

As I  look at it, it makes more sense than I ever thought. In two separate instances  in my life, my best friend was taken at a moments notice. In college, my best  friend was on a camping trip and was playing volleyball on the banks of the  river, the ball went into the water and he went to get it. Within 5 seconds, he  was gone, swept away and under in the current. One second he was having fun with  his friends, the next he was gone.

Then just a few years ago, the best man in my  wedding, my best friend was going to see his grandkids in Kansas City and was  killed in an automobile accident on the highway. As I look back at it, I can remember the conversation we had only about two hours before the incident, we  were planning on playing golf a few days later.

Who would have ever known that  would be the last tome I ever talked to him. The purpose of telling you about  this is that I took what this person said about cherishing every moment, and  brought it back into my life.

I will be more patient. I don’t know if you have heard about the new program that hair salons are doing  with cut hair. It’s pretty unique as they are taking the cut off hair and  sending it to soak up the oil spill. They are making big nylon mops and soaking it up.

Think about it, your hair absorbs oil anyway. If the hair is to  short to donate to Locks of Love, this is a good way to use it instead of just  tossing it away. Check it out on the web. Hopefully we will see the sun soon. I  hear it will be summertime this weekend.
