High School Girls Basketball teams at Hazelwood West and Lutheran North each went to St. Charles County during the Christmas break and returned home with Tournament titles, both at Catholic High Schools.
Hazelwood West traveled to St. Charles to win the Duchesne Tournament while Lutheran North traveled to O’Fallon and won the St. Dominic Tournament. It appears to be the first for both at those tourneys.
HAZELWOOD WEST started the season with three losses, two of them to Pattonville including the first round of the Fort Zumwalt North. Then the Wildcats won five in a row, two of them in the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament to take the consolation title and three straight at the Duchesne Tournament. The Wildcats have no seniors on their roster.
In the Duchesne Tournament Hazelwood West defeated Bishop DuBourg 69-24 then won over two Columbia, Mo., high schools, 64-38 over Battle and 45-44 over Father Tolton Catholic. After losing for the second time to Pattonville in the first round of the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament, the Wildcats rebounded with wins over Fort Zumwalt East, 52-27, and over Suburban XII Conference North Division rival McCluer, 65-28.
In the Duchesne Tournament freshman Taleah Dilworth scored 54 points, making 12 out of 14 from the free throw line and added 12 assists. Sophomore Abby Patterson had 31 rebounds and a tournament-high 14 shot blocks Sophomore Mykel Mathews had six steals.
At the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament Mathews scored 50 points, made 19 out of 27 free throws and stole the ball five times.
Patterson had 46 rebounds and 15 blocks, both tournament highs while Dilworth and junior Dony’a Blackson each had six assists.
Hazelwood West opens Suburban XII North play Thursday, Jan. 11, 5:30 at Riverview Gardens then hosts McCluer .Jan. 18 at 5:30 before visiting Jennings in a non-conference game Jan. 19 at 5:30.
LUTHERAN NORTH was taking a seven-game win streak and 12-1 overall record to Whitfield Jan. 9 and .is 2-0 in the Metro League following a 70-51 win at Mary Institute-Country Day, the second for the Crusaders over the Rams. Lutheran North started 2018 with a75-34 home win over Jennings.
In their fifth trip, in five years, to the St. Dominic tournament Lutheran North won over three St. Charles County high schools — 63-32 over St. Charles West, 52-36 over Lutheran St., Charles County and 48-27 over host St. Dominic. Leading Lutheran North in the St. Dominic tournament by junior Kaylynn Hayden, 34 points and three shot blocks, senior Adia Buford, 18 rebounds, junior Madison Buford, eight assists, and sophomore Sydney Dukes, nine steals.
Lutheran North hosts Duchesne Jan 16, 6 p.m., and then resumes Metro League play Jan. 19, 5:30, at Villa Duchesne.
