West Girls Soccer Off To 4-0 Start, Wins Hazelwood Classic Tourney

Hazelwood West Girls Soccer starts 2010 with four wins last week in route to winning the Hazelwood Classic.

West opened the season on March 22 with a 4-0 shutout of Mascoutah, Ill., then defeated Suburban North Conference rival Hazelwood Central, 3-0, on March 23, defeated Columbia, Ill., 3-0, on March 24 and won in overtime over Jefferson City, 2-1, on March 26.

West and Central competed this week in the Suburban North Tournament.

West scored two goals in the first half and two more in the second against Mascoutah. Mariah Gove had two assists and was one of four Wildcat players to score. Amy Ward, who scored first, Jenn Morris and Kayt Nevels each scored for the ‘Cats as Ashton Aubuchon was credited for the shutout as goalkeeper.

West scored all three goals in the first half against Central while padding a pair of second half goals against Columbia, Ill., in the second half after leading 1-0 at halftime. Scoring and statistical information against Central and Columbia (Ill.) were not available at press time.

T he March 26 game against Jefferson City was the closest the ‘Cats got to losing. Kim Hawn scored with 14 minutes left in the first  half The Jays tied the game at 1-1 midway

through the second half on a penalty kick goal by Kinsley Shouse. The game remain tied until three minutes left in the second overtime period when Suzy Ryan scored the tiebreaker and eventual game-winner.

LUTHERAN NORTH opened the season 3-0 and won the Lutheran-St. Charles County Tournament. In non-tournament action March 24 LHSN routed Riverview Gardens, 6-0 while in the LH-SC Tournament the Crusaders edged Sullivan, 2-1 on March 26 and pulled out a 1-0 win over the host team, LH-SC, on March 27. The Crusaders opened Metro Women’s Athletic Association Blue Division play March 30 against The Principia.

Lutheran North scored five first half goals in the rout of Riverview. Lydia Hohenstein and Elizabeth Hanson each scored twice while Kelsey Mansfield and Emily Laffold each scored once. Hohenstein, Mansfield and Rachel Tucker each had an assist. Lauren Ester played 50 minutes in shutout goalkeeping while Ally Brantley was in goal for 30 minutes.

Laffold scored two first-half goals in the Crusader win over Sullivan with Christina Ross assisting on one of the goals. In the shutout of Lutheran-St. Charles County Courtney Sansone stopped 18 Cougar shots on goal.
