The Hazelwood City Council has appointed Carol Stroker to serve as the representative for Ward 1 between now and April. She is certified to run for election as the Ward 1 Councilwoman for the April 6 election. City Clerk Colleen Klos conducted her Oath of Office ceremony during a recent Hazelwood City Council meeting.
As a Hazelwood resident, Stroker brings with her an impressive background as an elected public official. In April 1992, she was elected to the Hazelwood City Council and served in this capacity until December 1996. Her interest in serving local constituents on a larger scale prompted her to run for the Missouri House of Representatives and win election in November 1996. She worked with other state legislators during her two-year term. Also, Stroker was appointed as a legislative liaison program coordinator to the Missouri Department of Mental Health.
Stroker recently resigned from the Hazelwood School Board after serving as a member for more than five years. During this period, the school district passed two bond issues and a tax levy increase that made it possible to build four new middle schools, add full-day kindergarten, and renovate several school buildings across the district.
“As I have said many times before, the City of Hazelwood is where my heart lies. Serving on the City Council has been a rewarding experience for me and I look forward to doing it again,” said Carol Stroker. “I enjoy working with other Council members and local residents in dealing with everyday issues that help to improve the quality of life for all of us. I want to be responsive to people’s needs.”
She went on to say that the City of Hazelwood is a perfect location for business and industrial growth. “I want to progressively take advantage of this opportunity to see our region flourish. North County is a great place to live, work and play. I want to reinforce that positive message. Also, I’d like to see Hazelwood continue partnering with other neighboring communities in efforts to enhance the aesthetics of the North County area,” added Stroker.
Stroker currently serves on the City’s Civil Service Board as its chairperson. In addition, she’s been a realtor for 20 years, working with Prudential Patterson Realtors. According to Stroker, “Sustainable property values are very important to the region. There are ways to encourage more home ownership within the lending industry and I want to see them utilized.”
Stroker and her husband Bob have lived in Hazelwood for 43 years. They have four grown children, Mark, Brian, Patrick and Rebecca, as well as five grandchildren. She is a graduate of St. Elizabeth Academy and attended classes at St. Louis Community College – Florissant Valley. Her other activities include supporting North County Inc. and the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce. Not only has Stroker served on the St. Louis County Boundary Commission, but also she’s been an accredited tutor for the St. Louis Council on Adult Literacy and a charter member of the Hazelwood Literacy and Literature Committee.
In addition to Stroker, there are three other certified candidates running for election to the Hazelwood City Council on April 6. They are Donald Ryan (Ward 3), Russell Todd (Ward 5) and Rosalie Hendon (Ward 7). For more information on the upcoming April 6 elections, contact Hazelwood City Clerk Colleen Klos at (314) 513-5020.
