Hazelwood Approves Plastic Plant That Will Add 120 New Manufacturing Jobs

The Hazelwood City Council approved the second reading of a forgivable loan agreement bill between the City of Hazelwood and Silgan Plastics on April 8.  Silgan plans to use 335,000 square feet of space in a 535,500 square-foot building under construction by Panattoni Development at Aviator Business Park, the former Ford plant site.

Silgan has signed a 12-year lease with Panattoni and the forgivable loan is for a 12-year period.  The company is the second industrial tenant going in at Aviator Business Park. The first tenant is International Foods

Silgan’s new production facility in Hazelwood should be operational by late 2015, officials said.  A total of 120 new manufacturing jobs will be created with a payroll of $4.3 million.  In addition, it is estimated that Silgan will contribute around $300,000 in revenue to Hazelwood’s General Fund each year.

Sarah Macdonald, president of Silgan Plastics, said: “The primary focus of the facility is to support the growth of existing long-term strategic customers, lower the overall operating cost of our manufacturing network, and to provide a platform for growth in target markets.” She thanked Mayor Robinson and the city council for allowing the project to move forward so quickly.

Silgan Plastics is a leading manufacturer of plastic containers in North America for a variety of markets, including personal care, food, health care and household and industrial chemical markets. (see photo from council meeting on page 7)
