Last Saturday was “Veterans Day,” a day to honor those who served for our country but it was a day Hazelwood Central would rather forget as the Hawks were eliminated in the Missouri State High School Activities Association fall sports quarterfinal contests.
The fall sports season ended for Hazelwood Central last Saturday night in Boys Soccer at the Anheuser-Busch Conference and Sports Center, Fenton. The Hawks lost in the Class Three Quarterfinals to Lafayette, 1-0, and finished the season with a 20-6-2 record. Despite not getting a state trophy “I’m proud of the kids to get this far in the tournament,” said Hazelwood Central head boys soccer coach Bob Spotanski.”
A Kyle Biernacki goal early in the first half stood up for the Lafayette win as both teams played on a very slick soccer pitch. Outside the field the grass had some frost on it as teams played in nearly freezing temperatures. “It wasn’t pretty,” Spotanski said.
Hazelwood Central soccer got to the State Quarterfinal by winning District Two at Florissant Valley Park, next to the Eagan Civic Center two weeks ago, defeating McCluer North, 2-0, and Hazelwood West, 3-1. In the Nov. 7 Sectional game at Farmington Central shut out Jackson, 2-0. In the four MSHSAA tournament games Benny Jeffery, Charlie Morris and Ben McMahon scored two goals each while Marky Mirth has three assists.
Earlier last Saturday at Lindenwood University’s Harlan C. Hunter, St. Charles, Hazelwood Central Football lost 49-28 to CBC in the Class Six Quarterfinal game and the Hawks ended the season with a 9-2 record.
CBC scored the first 35 points, which included 21 in the second quarter as the Cadets led 28-0 at halftime. Three David Kannapel touchdown passes, two to Clay Wolff, and three Rayon Simmons touchdown runs helped CBC — whose head coach, Bob Shannon, won six Illinois High School Association State titles while coaching at East St. Louis Senior High — to their first ever Missouri State Semifinal.
Hazelwood Central senior quarterback Marvin McNutt led the Hawks with a touchdown pass to Chris Owens and a touchdown run. Central, on Nov. 4, secured second place in the Suburban North Conference (6-1) and bragging rights in the Hazelwood School District with a 23-0 home shutout of Hazelwood West.
