Hazelwood West Baseball and Hazelwood Central Girls Soccer overcame rain postponements to win district titles last week.
Hazelwood West, playing at home last week, won Class Four, District Seven Baseball. West held off Hazelwood East, 8-5,scoring seven runs in the first three innings but held off a four-run sixth inning by East. West, then overcame a 7-2 deficit with a six-run seventh to win 8-7 over McCluer North, who scored five runs in the third inning.
Against East Todd Woods and Jake Spies each scored two runs and had two hits, each included a double, while Shawn Kelly struck out six. Against McCluer North Joe Scanio and Jesse Seifert scored two runs each while Trevor Manis drove in three runs to help win their second straight district title, their eighth overall.
Hazelwood West was to play at Parkway Central Tuesday and the winner plays Thursday against Chaminade or St. Louis University High. Hazelwood Central Girls Soccer won Class Two, District Two last week at the Florissant Civic Center. Central shut out Riverview Gardens, 7-0 then had to go overtime to defeat McCluer North, 1-0. Lisa Wren, who scored three goals against Riverview, scored the game-winner against McCluer North in the fourth minute of overtime.
It was Central’s fourth straight district title, their 12th overall. The Hawks played Tuesday in Farmington against Jackson (for results go online at mshsaa.org, click on “Soccer” and under “Soccer — Girls” click on “2008 Class 2.”) The Central-Jackson winner plays Francis Howell North — who defeated Hazelwood West in the Class Two, District Four championship game — or Lindbergh Saturday, 6 p.m. at the Anheuser-Busch Center, Fenton.
