Rams-Patriots Bring Back Alot of Memories And One Lasting Image
By Randy Gardner
It took me a day or so to let the weekend of NFL football kind of sink in. It was a fabulous two game display that featured a ton of controversial calls. Either way, the game is over and the Super Bowl teams Rams and Patriots are ready to go. Who ever thought that it would be a matchup of the famous Super Bowl Game that many claim that the Patriots cheated by spying on the Rams practice.
The Rams at the time under Mike Martz said they would get revenge in a rematch sometime, well, it is almost 20 years later and it is here. I think that this will be a pretty good game. The Patriots will come out firing as they always do and you can’t count them out until the clock hits zero as we saw last weekend against the Chiefs. That was a great game back and forth with two great quarterbacks that defiantly wanted to win.
Unfortunately, it came down to a coin toss at the end in overtime. As the Chiefs came back and scored near the end, I told my son that they left too much time forTom Brady to do his thing and he did. Brady is 73-1 when leading by 14 points at halftime. That is unbelievable.
As for the Chiefs, what a great season and they only have great things to look forward to as it looks like their quarterback Mahommes will be getting a couple hundred million dollar contract to keep him in Kansas Cityt for a long time. As far as the Patriots go, its a team that you either love or hate. Either way you know they are good. I believe if you can shut down the crossing patterns of Edelman across the middle, you can take not of their successful passing game out of the equation.
As far as the Rams beating the Saints, lucky, lucky, lucky is all I can say. That’s life though. That pass interference call or no call at the end was the craziest most blatant
missed call I have ever seen. I am glad that the NFL is going to put something in place to remedy that kind of situation. That was a game changing, season ending kind of a call.
Who knows the Rams could have still won but how did every referee on that field miss that call. If the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage you can make that hit early but it wasn’t. That wasn’t even in question. Either way, the call was missed and the Rams advanced. I am a big believer in Karma, Will this call come back to haunt them with a bad call going against the Rams in the big game or will they just simply get blown out. Honestly, its not the Rams fault at all. It was the referees’ fault.
If I had to predict right now as we sit here about 10 days away from the big game. I would have to say that the Patriots will win this one. I know that makes a lot of past St. Louis Rams happy but I think that the experience on this Patriot team will keep them focused over the next two weeks. I am afraid that the hooplah that surrounds the Super Bowl will get this young Rams team a little unfocused. I could be wrong.
We have seen every thing this year in the NFL. Sometimes that craziness plays into the hands of a team and can motivate them. They have to remember that it is just another game, yes it is on the biggest stage ever and they have a revenge factor from 19 years ago, but it is just another game. It is decided on the field and it isn’t over till it is over.
For me personally, I just hope it is a good game for the fans. After spending all those years covering the Rams and being on the field on that last Super Bowl game 18 years ago, I know the heart ache they felt. It was the longest 12-hour drive back to St. Louis ever. That could be their motivation. It’s a game with nearly a 20 year history attached to it.
