Hawthorne Players’ last production of 2018 will be the acclaimed play, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, directed by Nancy Crouse. The show will open Nov. 2 at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre, located at Parker Rd. and Waterford Dr.

This moving play is as relevant as when it first appeared in 1959. Each member of an African-American family in 1950s Chicago has a dream to fulfill with money left by the father’s death insurance. Tensions increase as each try to find a way to escape the lower-class neighborhood—bringing up questions of identity, class, value, race and love—while outside forces work against them.

Crouse hopes the show “will get audiences to both listen and speak openly—and respectfully—about sensitive issues of race, gender and culture.” The show is dedicated to Dr. Sam Nwaobasi, the Nigerian accent coach, who died suddenly on Oct. 2.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 2, 3, 9 & 10 with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. Tickets are $18 for regular tickets, $16 for older adults and students, and $12 each for groups of six or more. Call the box office at 314-921-5678 or go to www.HawthornePlayers.com. A Raisin in the Sun is presented through special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
