Track and Field Almost Completed

By Jim Wieners

Track And Field at Trinity Catholic High School almost made a complete historical run, from winning Boys and Girls Class Three, District Three (May 12) and Sectional Two (May 19) titles at Lutheran North to winning their first State individual and relay state titles May 25-26 at Jefferson City High.

Trinity also took home Class Three State Track And Field Trophies. However, the words “State Champions” are not on the trophies.

Although Trinity won five boys titles as well as finishing second, fourth finish the Titans ended up finishing second with 57 points. Cardinal Ritter — which won three meet events, finished second in three, fifth in two and one each in third, sixth and eight — won the Class Three State team title with 72 points. Boys Track And Field joins Boys Soccer (2003, 2005, 2008, and 2011), Girls Soccer (2009, 2010 and 2016) and Football (2016) with state runner up finishes

In girls competition Trinity, with their first two individual state titles, ended up in third place with 56 points, their second after Girls Soccer in 2015. John Burroughs, which won four state events, won the Class Three State (62 points) after taking second in the 4×400-Meter Relay. Cardinal Ritter, which won four state events, finished second with 59 points after winning the 4×400-Meter Relay.

Prior to the merger of St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy and Rosary only Mercy, before merging with Aquinas, and Rosary combined won only five Boys State events titles. Mercy, which won the now-retired Class 3A 4×220-Yard Relay in 1977, won a pair of Class 3A State wins in now-retired dash events in 1978 from Sam Irons (100 Yards and 220 Yards). Rosary’s Stan Podolski won Class 4A State titles in Discus (1974) and Shot Put (1975).

Trinity junior Kemric Winston ran the 100-Meter dash May 26 in 10.86 seconds and became the first Titans Boys’ State Champion. Winston also won state in the 200-Meter Dash with a 21.48-second sprint. That equals the number of boys’ individual championships won by Mercy’s Irons and Rosary’s Podolski.

Trinity, also, doubled the number of State Relay champions won by Mercy. The Titans’ first State Relay title is in the Class Three 4×200-Meter Relay as they sprinted two laps, with three exchanges, in 1:28.64. A few events later Trinity added the state title in the 4×100-Meter relay as the Titans sprinted a lap, with three exchanges, in 42.87 seconds.

Freshman Sydney Juszczyk became the First Trinity Girl to win state. On May 25, Juszczyk threw her first 1:28.64Javelin attempt 142’3” and that held up to win Class Three State. Juszczyk also took second in the 100-Meter Hurdles (14.93 seconds May 26) and was sixth in the Triple Jump (35’4”-third attempt)

While Juszczyk became the first Trinity Girl to win in State field, junior DeAyvion Smith became the first Titan Girl to win State Track. Smith won the 400-Meter Dash as she took a lap in 57.14 seconds) Smith also finished sixth in the 200-Meter Dash (26.05 seconds) the last event of the day for Trinity.
