Battling through inclement weather at times the Girls Soccer teams at Hazelwood Central High School and Incarnate Word Academy went through the opening week of the season unbeaten after four games each.
The only blemish was Hazelwood Central playing to a 1-1 draw at Lutheran St. Charles County, March 20, in the Lutheran St. Charles County Tournament. Otherwise, Hazelwood Central outscored their first four opponents 17-1. Meanwhile, Incarnate Word, with 15 goals scored, have four shut outs in their first four games.
Hazelwood Central and Incarnate Word are not on their schedules this year, including post-season. Hazelwood Central is in Class Four while IWA is in Class Three.
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL and Lutheran St. Charles County were each 2-0-1 in the Lutheran St. Charles County Tournament, a round-robin event that includes Lutheran North and Sullivan. Hazelwood Central had a better goal differential of 15-1 over the 13-2 margin by Lutheran St. Charles County. Both Hazelwood Central and Lutheran St. Charles County scored 10-0 shutouts over Lutheran North.
In the season-opening shutout of Lutheran North, March 19, junior Jada Harvey, who scored eight goals on 20 shots and had three assists through the opening week of play, scored four times in a game that came to a stop midway through the second half on the 10-goal mercy rule. Senior Lauryn Ditto added two more goals while senior Gabi Cowan had two of her four assists this week against Lutheran North.
Against Lutheran St. Charles County, the Hawks took a first half lead on a Harvey goal. However, Lutheran St. Charles goalkeeper Shelby Dannegger had 11 saves and the Cougars scored the second-half equalizer by Bre Edelen.
In the Lutheran St. Charles County Tournament finale March 22 Hazelwood Central shuts out Sullivan 4-0. Harvey scored twice while sophomore Tori Bell, who had two goals last week, and senior Logan Pratte, who scored three in the first four games, each had a goal against Sullivan. In other tournament games, Lutheran St. Charles County defeated Sullivan 2-1 while Sullivan defeated Lutheran North 5-0.
Hazelwood Central also participated in one game of the 17th Annual Parkway College Showcase at Lou Fusz Soccer Park and on a rainy March 24, the Hawks shut out Parkway North 2-0. Harvey and Pratte each scored a goal while sophomore goalkeeper Raquel Henderson, who had 23 saves and a 0.27 goals against average through four games, stopped 11 Parkway North shots.
Hazelwood Central had three 4 p.m. home games, which began March 27 against Maplewood-Richmond Heights. Then the Hawks play McCluer North, Thursday, March 29, and Ritenour April 2
INCARNATE WORD opened at home March 20 with a 9-0 whitewashing of St. Phillipine Duchesne, of St. Charles. It is the fourth consecutive year IWA has shut out Duchesne and the Red Knights have out-scored the Pioneers 16-0. IWA outscored Duchesne 14-0 the last 2 games.
IWA scored four goals in the first half and five more in the second. Eight Red Knights scored including two each by seniors Abby Tremain and Emily Groark, who assisted in three others. In four games, Groark has five goals and three assists. Duchesne goalkeeper Belle Boschert kept the game from ending sooner with 15 saves.
The next day, March 21, Incarnate Word won 1-0 at Edwardsville, Ill., on an unassisted first half goal by junior Elizabeth Goldstein, her second in the first two games. Goldstein has four assists in the first four games.
Two days after that the Red Knights played the first of two games, in two days, at the 17th Annual Parkway College Showcase at Lou Fusz Soccer Park. On March 23, IWA shuts out Metea Valley 2-0, scoring a goal in each half. The Red Knights got a goal each from Groark and senior Olivia Layton.
