Hazelwood Central Football Edges

SLUH For Class 6, Dist. 2 Second Seed

Hazelwood Central and St. Lous University High each were 7-2 in football, both defeated 1-8 DeSmet and both played 6-3 Lafayette (SLUH won, Central lost).

SLUH lost to a pair of top seeds and Metro Catholic Confernce rivals — Class Six, District     Two and defending State Champion CBC (9-0) and Class Five, District Two Chaminade (8-1).

Hazelwood Central lost to a pair of Rockwood District High Schools — Lafayette and Class Six, District One top seed Eureka (8-0). SLUH also defeated 7-1 and previously undefeated Kirkwood, 35-28, while Hazelwood Central is on a six-game winning streak following a 40-0 shutout at winless (0-9) Columbia-Hickman.

But while SLUH played against more teams with winning records (six) than Hazelwood Central (three) it was Central getting the second seed by 12/100th of a point (40.32-40.21) over SLUH. So Hazelwood Central hosts 2-7 Francis Howell Central, Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. while third-seeded SLUH hosts 3-6 Hazelwood West, Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. So if Hazelwood Central and SLUH both win they will play Oct. 31 at Central.

The points that favor Hazelwood Cental was based on average of team records, playing up and down a class (which did not figure in the decision because Class Six is the highest class), strength of schedule and win loss margin. Team records and strenght of schedule were based on 20 points per win, 15 for overtime loss (team records only) and 10 for regulation loss and win-loss margins are for each game up to 13 points.

HAZELWOOD WEST moved up to the number six seed and the right to play at SLUH following a 20-0 home shut out over Seckman (Imperial). Steven McClain completed 10 passes for 200 yards and two West touchdowns.

Elsewhere in District Six Friday 7 p.m. CBC hosts DeSmet while 3-5 Ritenour hosts 3-6 Francis Howell North and the winners meet Oct. 30, 7 p.m.

     CLASS FIVE — HAZELWOOD EAST (5-4) HOSTS McCLUER NORTH (3-6) Saturday 2 p.m. with the winner playing at Chaminde Oct. 30, 7 p.m. after both Hazelwood East and McCluer North lost at home to Rockwood District schools. East lost 24-14 to Eureka although East’s Jay Kirk completed 10 passes for 192 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns to Antonio Ransom, who caught four pases for 98 yards. McCluer North lost to Lafayette 49-20 but North was led by Urics King — who ran for a touchdown, returned an intercepted pass for a touchdown and threw a toucchdown pass to Harry Ballard. Hazelwood East defeated McCluer North 40-16 Sept. 12 at East.

McCLUER (3-6) visits 6-3 Pattonville after McCluer lost 27-7 at Webster Groves, who plays Ladue Friday, 7 p.m. at Parkway South. McCluer or Pattonville plays Webster Groves or Ladue Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

   CLASS TWO, DISTRICT FIVE — TRINITY CATHOLIC (6–3) hosts Lutheran St. Charles County (6-3) Friday, 7 p.m. and the winner plays Oct. 30, 7 p.m. at 9-0 Brentwood, who got a bye as a top seed since Maplewood-Richmond Heights dropped football. After winning six straight Trinity heads to districts on a two-game losing streak after falling 34-7 at home to Jennings. Trinity won at Lutheran 33-27 on Sept. 11 and the Tians went on to win the Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small Division title.

   LUTHERAN NORTH (5-4) hosts 2-6 Northwest Academy of Law Saturday, 2 p.m. and the winner plays the winner of the Friday 7 p.m. game betwen 6-3 Hermann and 5-4 Principia on Oct. 31 (Oct. 30 if Hermann plays Northwest Academy. Lutheran North got the second seed as they played up against higher classes, which 10 points per class for each higher class opponent divided by nine games, which included six Class Four teams, Class Six SLUH and Class Three John Burroughs..

Lutheran North is coming off their fourth win in a row fifth win in the last six games after an 0-3 start follwing a 69-19 pasting at St. Mary’s scoring 41 unanswered second-half points. Aqeel Glass completed 17 passes for 312 yards and seven touchdowns including four to Brandon Sumrall and two to Cameron Russell, who had eight receptions for 171 yards. Donovan Marshall ran the ball 20 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
