Central Next For Riverview; West Goes to McCluer North

There are two weeks left for the 2008 high school football season, including in qualifying for state through districts and for the top two teams in each there will be more games after Nov. 1.

This Friday at 7 p.m. Trinity Catholic host McCluer South-Berkeley in Class Three, District Five, while Pattonville visits Fort Zumwalt North in Class Five, District Four.

This Saturday’s games are at 2 p.m., because of ACT tests and the games include Hazelwood Central at Riverview Gardens and Hazelwood West at McCluer North in Class Six, District Four, Hazelwood East at McCluer in Class Five, District Four and Lutheran North closes ABC League play at John Burroughs, which is also a Class Three, District Five game.

Since The Independent News will not be publishing Oct. 30, here are the scheduled games for Oct. 31-Nov. 1. On Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. McCluer visits Pattonville in a Class Five, District Four game. On Nov. 1 Hazelwood Central visits Hazelwood West and McCluer North hosts Riverview Gardens in Class Six, District Four games at 1 p.m., Hazelwood East hosts Fort Zumwalt North in a Class Five, District Four game at 1 p.m. and in Class Three, District Five Lutheran North visits McCluer South-Berkeley at 1 p.m. while Trinity Catholic visits John Burroughs at 2 p.m.

CLASS SIX, DISTRICT FOUR — McCluer North and Riverview Gardens could meet Nov. 1 for the district title and home field for the regionals if they both win. Last Saturday Riverview Gardens (2-3 Suburban North Conference, 5-3 overall, 1-0 +13 District) got three touchdowns from Trevor Brothers in a 20-0 homecoming. shutout of Hazelwood West (4-1, 6-2, 0-1 -13) A 42-yard field goal by Alex Beckman led McCluer North (2-3, 4-4, 1-0 +1) to a 31-30 win at Hazelwood Central (3-2, 6-2, 0-1 -1).

Riverview head coach Robert Hall said last Saturday’s game was “big for both (Riverview and West)” McCluer North coach Jim Schottmueller said that in districts they look to “one game at a time.” Hazelwood Central head coach Richard Nixon said “we got to battle for four quarters (each game).”

CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT FOUR — The winner of the Hazelwood East-McCluer game could clinch a post-season spot. McCluer (4-2, 5-2, 1-0 +13), with three Xavier Perkins touchdowns, won last Friday 35-0 at Fort Zumwalt North (4-4, -13) while a 23-yard field goal by Terrell Downing in the second over time helped Hazelwood East (3-3, 5-3, 1-0 +1), who had 2 E’lon Spight touchdowns, to a 24-21 win over Pattonville (1-5, 3-5, 0-1 -1). “Two tough opponents, back to back,” said McCluer coach Joe Henke about East and Pattonville. “Try to take it one game at a time, hope it goes our way.”

CLASS THREE, DISRICT FIVE — Last Saturday on their home fields McCluer South-Berkeley (5-3, 1-0 +13) won 34-10 over John Burroughs (2-2 ABC League, 3-4, 0-1 -13) while Lutheran North (1-3, 3-5, 1-0 +9) won 21-12 over Trinity Catholic (2-6, 0-1 -9).
