By Jim Wieners
Despite not taking home state trophies 2009-2010 was a great year for Trinity Catholic Football, North County Technical Girls Basketball and Hazelwood West Girls Soccer.
Trinity Catholic qualified for state post-season playoffs for the first time after going 3-0 and winning Class Three, District Five. Trinity avenged a 10-7 defeat to St. Francis Borgia in Washington on Oct. 9 with a 28-7 win in the Class Three Regional Round at Trinity on Nov. 4. The Titans’ 8-4 season ended Nov. 9 with a 41-0 home loss in the Sectional Round to eventual State runner-up Bowling Green.
Prior to the St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy-Rosary merger, which became Trinity Catholic, only the 1969 Mercy High School Football team participated in post-season play. The former University City-based high school was Class 3A State Runner up to Kansas City-DeLaSalle.
Next Year Trinity will compete in Class Three, District Four as Lutheran North and McCluer South-Berkeley will remain their district rivals. However, Cardinal Ritter, an Archdiocesan Athletic Association rival who defeated Trinity last year, will join Trinity as they replace John Burroughs.
North County Technical has never had a team compete past district play to the sectional round, let alone the quarterfinals in Basketball, boys or girls, or any team sport other than Boys Track & Field. The 2009-2010 Girls Basketball team was the first team in any sport to win 20 games, a
Class Three, District Five title, at Whitfield, and advancement to the Class Three Quarterfinals before losing to Macon, 59-28, March 13 in Hannibal. The majority of players including starters are juniors so next season looks promising.
Five of the six teams North Tech has lost to (1-1 versus Francis Howell Central) did not advance past district play (Four in Class Five, one in Class Four) and Macon finished fourth in Class Three State. North Tech defeated Class Five, District Five Champion McCluer North, Class Three State Runner Up and two-time state finalist Cardinal Ritter (2009 State Champions) and two times each over Lutheran-St. Charles County and Riverview Gardens. North Tech won the Trinity Tournament and was second in the Kennedy Christmas Tournament.
Hazelwood West won 25 and lost only two in girls soccer but their hopes of a state title were dashed May 25 in a 4-0 loss to eventual State Third-Place finisher Cor Jesu Academy in the Class Three Sectionals. Hazelwood West had three wins over Hazelwood Central and McCluer two wins over Class Three State Runner up Pattonville as well as McCluer North and shut out Class One Runner Up Trinity Catholic. Mariah Gove, who had 26 goals and 22 assists, Kate Snow, eight shutouts and one goal allowed in nine games, and Ashton Aubuchon, 0.45 goals against average and eight shutouts, were among the team leaders.
Most of the West players are seniors so it will be hard to match their performance next year.
