Trinity Boys Basketball Three-Peat

MICDS Holiday Tourney Title

  For the third consecutive year, Trinity Catholic High School Boys Basketball begins January fresh off winning the Mary Institute-Country Day School Holiday Invitational Tournament, which took place Dec. 23, 27-30.

The Titans defeated Liberty (Lake St. Louis) 71-48, Kirkwood 64-54, Ladue (Horton Watkins) 45-40 and Francis Howell (Weldon Spring) 58-52. It is the third year in a row the Titans defeated Liberty, a Wentzville District high school, and Howell in the MICDS holiday tournament and the second year in a row Trinity defeated Howell in the MICDS tournament championship game. Francis Howell is coached by former McCluer athletic director (and coach) Kurt Jacob, a McCluer alum.

Trinity split the first two Archdiocesan Athletic Association Division II games. The Titans defeated St. Charles-based Duchesne 71-41 at Bob Strub Gym on Dec. 13. A week later, Dec. 20, Trinity lost at Living Word Christian in O’Fallon (Mo.) 62-56. The Titans were 8-2 overall, 1-1 in AAA Division II prior to a Dec. 6 game against Bishop DuBourg at Strub Gym

Seven-foot senior Ryan Kalkbrenner averages over 16 points per game, shooting over 73 percent from inside the three-point arc and making at least 23 out of 32 free throws. Kalkbrenner averages around 10 rebounds per game while blocking at least 50 shots. Kalkbrenner had triple-doubles against Hazelwood Central (18 points, 13 rebounds and 15 blocks) and Ladue (10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks), and double-doubles against Hazelwood East (23 points and 19 rebounds) and Francis Howell (19 points and 12 rebounds).

Six-foot senior Rashad Weekly averages around 14 points per game, making at least 36 out of 48 free throws, at least 28 assists and 13 steals. Weekly scores 20 points against Hazelwood Central and Duchesne while making eight assists against Whitfield. Stats for Kalkbrenner and Weekly do not include games against Kirkwood and DuBourg.

Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3 p.m., Trinity plays Mehlville in the Highland, Ill., Shootout. Mehlville features seven-foot senior Davion Bradford (15.1 points per game, 11.7 rebounds per game and 27 blocked shots in 10 games). Trinity visits Lutheran St. Charles Jan. 17 at 7:30 and hosts Chaminade Jan. 18, time TBA. McCluer Comets

  McCLUER — The Comets won their first 10 games before losing the last two in the Legends of Winter Roundball Classic at St. Louis University High School, to tournament runner up Cardinal Ritter College Prep, 76-71 in the semifinals, and to Christian Brothers College Prep (CBC) 71-59 in the third-place game. St. Louis Christian Academy (Lafayette Avenue, near Interstate 44) won the Legends of Roundball Classic.

McCluer won the GAC/Suburban Challenge game over Wentzville-Holt Dec. 18 at Lindenwood University Robert Hyland Arena in St. Charles. The Comets won the first two games of the Legends of Roundball Classic over John Burroughs, 63-44, and Jennings, 75-65. McCluer retunes to action with three 5:30 games in the M4-Main Gym (near Elizabeth Street); against Suburban Red Pool rival McCluer North Thursday (Jan. 9), against Granite City, Ill., Jan. 15, and Hazelwood East Jan. 22.

Leading the Comets in scoring include senior Devon Barshow (14.2 points per game), senior Jeremiah Johnson (11.6 points per game) and junior Anias Futrell (11.3 points per game). Barshow (67 rebounds) scored 24 points Dec. 3 against SLUH and pulled down 10 rebounds Nov. 29 against Quincy (Ill.) Notre Dame. Johnson (33 assists, 33 steals) scored 20 points against Holt. Futrell (67 rebounds) scored 18 against Holt. Senior Kameryn Hubbard blocked 22 shots overall while scoring 28 points against Cardinal Ritter.
