After Winning AAA Small Division Title Trinity Catholic Hosts Lutheran North

By Jim Wieners

Trinity Catholic High School Football is on a six-game winning streak after losing the season opener 20-18 to Class Three Wright City but this Friday, Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m. the Titans host a Class Two, District Five rival they have beaten only once in team history.

That district rival is a North County rival, Lutheran High School North. And the only time the Titans won was Oct. 16, 2009 in a round-robin Class Three district which Trinity won and went as far as the Class Three Sectional before losing 41-0 to eventual State runner up Bowling Green. Last year Lutheran North defeated Trinity twice including a Class Two, District Five semifinal

Trinity, 6-1 overall, went 4-0 against St. Charles County opponents and was 5-0 against Archdiocesan Athletic Assocation rivals of which the Titans were 4-0 in winning the AAA Small Division title for the first time in team history. Trinity won their last two AAA Small Division games, 36-22 at John F. Kennedy and 54-21 at home over Bishop DuBourg.

Darries Rainey scored two first half touchdowns against Kennedy while Alphonzo Andrews ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns. Against DuBourg  Isaiah Williams completed seven passes for 191 yards and four touchdowns including two in the first half to Marcus Washington and a third-quarter pass to Darion Bolden, who opened the third quarter with a 64-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Trinity has defeated two Class Four teams — Kennedy, which added Valley Park (who never had football) as a co-op and St. Charles, 39-35 — was 3-1 against Class Three teams including wins over DuBourg, Duchesne, 40-19, and 2012-2014 AAA Small Champion O’Fallon Christian, 46-20, and won 33-27 over Class Two, District Five rival Lutheran St. Charles County.

Lutheran North is 3-4 overall, finished Metro League play with a record of 3-2 and the Crusaders have won three of their last four games. Lutheran North played against five Class Four teams defeating Priory, 50-0, Lutheran South, 72-65, and Mary Institute Country Day School, 33-21 while losing to Clayton, 29-21, and Metro League Champion Westminster Christian Academy, 35-6. Lutheran North also lost to Class Six St. Louis University High, 48-13 (win number 200 for SLUH Coach Gary Kornfeld), and Class Three John Burroughs, 53-12.

Leading the way for Luthean North is Trinity transfer Aqeel Glass, who has thrown 10 touchdown passes but has been intercepted eight times, and Cortez Simmons, with seven touchdowns including four rushing.

Trinity and Lutheran North are competing against 7-0 Brentwood, 5-2 Hermann and 5-2 Lutheran St. Charles County for the top seed in Class Two, District Five which carries a first-round bye since Maplewood-Richmond Heights dropped football this year. Next week, Oct. 16, Class Four opponents are ahead for Lutheran North (at. St. Mary’s) and Trinity (hosting Jennigs) in 7 p.m. games
