Lutheran North Back To Final 4;
Hawks, Incarnate Win Districts

After losing in last year’s Class Three State Girls Basketball Quarterfinals to Clark County, Lutheran North is returning to the State Semifinals for the second time in three years. This time, the Crusaders are going to Missouri State University in Springfield, instead of the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Thursday, March 7, Lutheran North will play at 6:50 against Licking at JQH Arena prior to the 8:30 contest between Trenton and defending three-time State Champion Strafford, currently on a 113-game winning streak dating back to Jan. 22, 2016. Friday, March 8 the winners play at 2:40 for the championship at JQH Arena while the losers play in the 12:50 third place game at Hammons Student Center.
Lutheran North (25-6) is going to Springfield on an 11-game wining streak. The Crusaders won their way to Missouri State with a 52-41 Quarterfinal win over Whitfield March 2 at Normandy’s Viking Hall. Lutheran North broke a 24-24 tie in the last minute of the third quarter with a 10-0 run that lasted until the first minute of the fourth quarter. Senor Madison Buford scored 17 points and pulled down 14 rebounds
In the Feb. 27 Sectional at Francis Howell Central in Cottlevillle Lutheran North rolled over Hermann 54-37.
The Crusaders broke a 16-16 tie with a 12-2 run in the final 5:35 of the first half to take a 28-18 lead to the locker room. A 15-5 run in the final 7:01 of the game sealed the Crusader win as Buford and senior Kaylynn Haden each scored 16 points.
Lutheran North won Class Three, District Seven at North Tech by rolling over Public High League opponents Sumner, 92-15, Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, 78-19, and secured their third straight district title with a 52-42 win over McCluer South-Berkeley. Buford, with 10 rebounds, and senior Heaven Davis, scored 10 point each against Sumner, Hayden scored 23 against CSOMBS and Buford had 21 points and 16 points against MS-Berkeley.
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL won Class Five, District Six at Francis Howell Central and took on Nerinx Hall Feb. 6 at St. Charles West. The winner plays Fort Zumwalt North or Jefferson City Saturday, March 9, 2:445 at Lindenwood University’s Robert F. Hyland Arena in St. Charles. That winner plays in the March 14 at 12 noon State Semifinal at Hammons Student Center at Missouri State University in Springfield and the March 16 Finals at JQH Arena, Springfield; third place at 12:50 and championship at 8:10.
Hazelwood Central (20-7 as of March 3) defeated two Francis Howell District schools, Howell North (58-39) on Feb. 26 and Howell Central (62-47) on March 1. Senior Jakayla Kirk scored 15 points against Howell North while sophomore Nariyah Simmons scored 22 against Howell Central as the Hawks outscored the Spartans 42-26 in the second half.
INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY won their 10th consecutive district title by smashing two City of St. Charles District schools, St. Charles West (76-33 Feb. 28) and St. Charles High (71-25 on March 2) in Class Four, District Seven. IWA took their 26-2 record to the March 5 Sectional against St. Francis Borgia at Troy Buchanan and the winner play Saturday, 2:45 against Parkway North or Clayton at Francis Howell Central. That winner plays in the March 15, 3:30 semifinal at JQH Arena and March 16 at 4:30 for the championship at JQH Arena or 12:50 for third place at Hammons Student Center.
Senior Marisa Warren scored 19 points against St. Charles West while junior Katie Rolfes scored 16 against St Charles High.
