3 Hazelwood Schools Start 2-0, East Hosts Central Saturday

BY JIM WIENERS

After two weeks of high school football all three high schools in the Hazelwood School District are each 2-0 but not all three will be unbeaten after this Saturday, when East hosts Central in a 2 p.m. Suburban North Conference game at Gorzynski Field because of ACT Tests.

Hazelwood East, which holds a 21-19 lead in series, is coming off wins over Metro Catholic Conference teams, CBC (34-14) and DeSmet (28-0), while Hazelwood Central enjoyed home non-conference wins over University City, 31-6, and Columbia-Rock Bridge, 35-7. East has a pair of two-touchdown scorers, DeJuan Owens and Donald Shumpert, and a pair of two-touchdown passers, Jacques Evans and Eric Brown. Central is led by Maurice Scott with four touchdown runs while Kerry Gibson has two touchdown passes and kicked for nine extra points.

Hazelwood East interim head Coach Mike Jones said in order to win games the Spartans must hold the opposition to seven points per game and to stop the running game. “The kids did a great job,” Jones said last Saturday at St. Louis University High, which will be the home site for DeSmet games.

Hazelwood Central head coach Richard Nixon told reporters last Saturday after the Rock Bridge game that he preaches family, team building and building blocks to the Hawks. “These younger men have won since they have been together,” said Nixon, the second-year Hawk head coach.

Meanwhile HAZELWOOD WEST started the season with wins over two Suburban North teams, Pattonville (39-33) and Ritenour (19-0), avenging losses to these teams from last year. Saturday at 1 p.m. (may change due to ACT tests) West host St. Louis Northwest Academy of Transportation and Law — according to West athletic director Tim Williams, who mentioned it after the Pattonville game, Aug. 29 — not Northwest-Cedar Hill according to some schedules. Next week, Sept. 20, East plays at West while Central holds homecoming against Ritenour.

Central will be at West Nov. 1 in Class Six, District Four.
