Twelfth Ferguson Commission Meeting in St. Charles June 8

The Ferguson Commission will hold its 12th full commission meeting on Monday, June 8, from 5:30 to 8:45 p.m. at St. Charles High School, 725 N. Kingshighway. The agenda for this meeting is to engage community members in discussing concerns and offering insights. An update of the progress in child well-being and educational equity, municipal courts and governance, citizen-law enforcement relations and economic inequity and opportunity will be shared. The evening will be hosted by St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann and St. Charles Mayor Sally Faith.

The previous 11 meetings were held in St. Louis County and St. Louis City. Expanding the conversation to St. Charles County, one of Missouri’s most advantaged counties for child well-being, is part of meeting Gov. Nixon’s charge to address the underlying social and economic conditions faced by this region.

The meeting will include audience polling on key regional issues, breakout sessions and a public comment section, all of which become public record and part of the Commission’s legacy.

Among the findings to date are the following:

  • A fourth of the region’s population is made up of children and youth.
  • Twenty percent of the children in Missouri live in poverty.
  • In St. Charles, mental health services subsized with public funds are being delivered to 1735 children and youth.

If the economic mobility of poor children is not addressed, the United States gross national product will fall by about 4% each year over the children’s lifetime. This will cost the nation approximately $7 trillion.
