For the second year in a row and third in five years the McCluer North Stars Boys Basketball team wins the season opening tournament Thanksgiving week at St. Francis Borgia Regional Catholic High School in Washington, Mo.
At the 62nd Annual Borgia Turkey Tournament McCluer North won their second straight Blue Division title. Playing as the top seed overall McCluer North opened with wins over Pool A teams, Carnahan High School of the Future and Normandy Collaborative and won the Blue Division title over Pool B winner Pacific.
McCluer North opened with a 95-68 win over Carnahan, a team the Stars played last year. After that the Stars won Pool A with a 93-39 rout over Normandy, a former rival from the former Suburban North Conference. On Nov. 29 McCluer North was taken to overtime for the second consecutive year but this time it was against Pacific.
And this time the final was not as close as the 72-70 win last year over Cardinal Ritter as McCluer North won going away over Pacific, 64-58. Center Demarco Owens led the Stars in the win with 26 points and 14 rebounds while guard Demonte Morris added 14 points. Pacific defeated two teams McCluer North played in last year’s tournament, Rockwood-Summit (64-22) and Cardinal Ritter (70-57) to win Pool B.
Also in the Blue Division Carnahan defeated Normandy, 71-46, in Pool A and Ritter defeated Summit in Pool B. Ritter won third place over Carnahan, 71-46 while Summit won fifth place over Normandy, 47-38.
GOLD DIVISION — NORTH TECHNICAL, making its first appearance in the legendary Thanksgiving Tournament played against three Franklin County High Schools, two of them in Washington, Mo. In Pool D North Tech opened with an 83-50 win over Union, the most lopsided game the Golden Eagles played in the tournament then lost to the host Borgia Knights, 50-45, the smallest margin in the Tournament.
On Nov. 29 North Tech ended their Borgia Tournament appearance victorious as the Golden Eagles defeated Washington High, 63-57. In Pool C Washington lost to CBC, 77-52, then won over Soldan-International Studies.
Pool D Champion Borgia had defeated Union, 83-50, while CBC, by defeating Soldan, won Pool C. On the same night CBC won their first state football championship at the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, the Basketball Cadets held off the host Knights 67-66, as Borgia settled for runner up for the second year in a row after missing the last-second shot. Christian Willis led CBC with 24 points.
Soldan-International Studies won Gold Division fifth place over Union, 78-59.
