District Football Rematches: East Visits Webster Grove, McCluer North Hosts Kirkwood

By Jim Wieners

On Nov. 6, 2013, in the second round of Class Five, District Two Football playoffs McCluer North was shut out at Kirkwood 34-0 in Jim Schottmueller’s final game as the Stars’ head coach while at Ritenour Hazelwood East ended their season with a 38-21 loss to Webster Groves.

Webster Groves won the district title at Kirkwood, 21-19 on Nov. 11. After Webster’s 42-21 home semifinal loss to Parkway Central on Nov. 22 Kirkwood would avenge their district final loss to visiting Webster with a 44-0 Turkey Day whitewashing by the Pioneers over the Statesmen on Nov. 28.

This weekend Hazelwood East and McCluer North each get a chance on payback from last year’s district losses. Friday, Aug. 29. Hazelwood East visits Moss Field in Webster Groves, behind Hixson Middle School and near the Intersection of Elm Avenue and Interstate 44, for a 7 p.m. contest with the 0-1 Statesmen. Saturday, Aug. 30, the third head coach in McCluer North history, Courtland Griffin, makes his home debut as the 0-1 Stars host 1-0 Kirkwood for a 1 p.m. game, heat permitting.

Hazelwood East, McCluer North and Webster Groves are in Class Five, District Two while Kirkwood is in Class Six, District One so there will be no further rematches this year between the Stars and the Pioneers.

Due to the excessive heat the Aug. 23 game between Hazelwood East and University City at Gorzynski Field was suspended in the first minute of the third quarter. University City was leading 9-6 when play was halted and as of 11 a.m. Aug. 25 there was no make up date or date of completion said Hazelwood East Athletic Director Corey Johnson in a phone call. Meanwhile Webster Groves is coming off a humiliating 58-12 loss Aug. 22 in a night game at Francis Howell High.

McCluer North and Kirkwood both played on the road the night of Aug. 22 avoiding the sun during the excessive heat. Like the eight previous games coached by Schottmueller Jefferson City did the same to Griffin in his head coaching debut as the Jays won 17-0 at Pete Adkins Stadium. Kirkwood had a shorter trip, on Lindbergh Boulevard from Essex Avenue, and the Pioneers rolled to a 48-9 win at Lindbergh High.

On Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. East returns home to play Oakville, a 10-6 loser Aug. 22 at Parkway South, while McCluer North remains at home to play University City.
