Despite Setting State Track Records Hazelwood Central Girls 2nd Again

Despite setting state records in three preliminary events, Hazelwood Central Girls Track & Field finished in second place behind Lee’s Summit West, for the second consecutive year, in Class Five State May 26-27 at Dennis and Roberta Licklider Track Complex inside Pete Adkins Stadium at Jefferson City High School.

Lee’s Summit West, with 19 athletes entered in state, won five events and scored a team-high 109 points in winning back-to-back state titles, their fourth overall since 2006. Hazelwood Central had nine athletes entered and won only two events while scoring 62 points as the Hawks finished second for the fifth time since 1989, while winning state three times since 1987.

Hazelwood Central Girls set an-all class record in the 4×200 Meter Relay as seniors Brittney Johnson and Destiney Nash, junior Aisha Southern and sophomore Danielle Frank ran the preliminary and took first place in 1:37.85. That broke the all-class record of 1:38.42 Hazelwood Central set in 2004 and a Class Five mark of 1:39.5. The same four won the state final in 1:38.06 was better than their old records but did not surpass this year’s preliminary record.

Junior Deja Ingram set two Class Five records in taking winning the 100 Meter Dash (11.7 seconds) and taking first in the 200 Meter Dash preliminary (24.15 seconds). That broke the previous Class Five records of 12.09 seconds (100 Dash) and 24.38 seconds (200 Dash) set in 2015 by Jahliah Clay, Blue Springs South. Ingram finished second (25.01 seconds) to Pattonville sophomore Jada Moore (24.51 seconds), Frank was second to Lee’s Summit West senior Erin Sermons in the 400-Meter Dash (56.15 seconds) and third at 200 Meters while Johnson was third in the 100 Dash.

PARA ATHLETE, sophomore Amari Anderson competed against Perryville Junior Faith Newell in four Class L events and Anderson won the Shot Put (11’3” in 4th and final attempt) 100 Dash (39.36 seconds), 200 Dash (47.38 seconds) and 400 Dash (1:54). Unfortunately, Anderson’s wins did not count in the Hazelwood Central point standings.

McCLUER NORTH won the State Girls Class Five 4×100 Meter Relay as seniors Sydney Rogers and Azyairiah Griffin as well as freshmen Michelle Owens and Lauryn Taylor ran the final in 48.23 seconds.

McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY won Class Three Girls State with 60 points, their second title in a row, sixth since 2007 and 12th since 1982 when combined with Berkeley High. Two seniors — Raheema Westfall, who won the 100-Meter Dash (11.76 seconds) and 200-Meter Dash (24.92 seconds), and Octavia Cato, second in the 100 Dash (11.85 seconds) and 200 Dash (24.94 seconds) — participated in winning the 4×100 Relay (48.37 seconds) and 4×400 Meter Relay (4:03.01).

OTHER TOP THREE CLASS THREE GIRLS FINISHERS — Lutheran North took second in the 4×100 Relay (50.07 seconds) and 4×200 Relay (1:44.74) while Trinity Catholic sophomore DeAyvion Smith was second (58.98 seconds) to Fair Grove freshman Madison Clark in the 400 Dash and North Tech junior Jessica Meyers was third in the 100 Dash (12.32 seconds).

BOYS STATE TRACK & FIELD — McCluer South Berkeley took fourth place in Class Three (36 points) while Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood West were tied for 16th Place in Class Five (18 points each). Hazelwood Central took third place in three events including two relays, 4×100 (42.82 seconds) and 4×200 (1:28.33), and senior Edward Becton in Shot Put (57’7.5”in fourth attempt). Also finishing in third place includes McCluer North sophomore Lance Lang, Class Five 100 Dash (10.8 seconds) and McCluer South-Berkeley senior Jordan Cole, Class Three 200 Meters (22.28 seconds).
