McCluer North has been the only high school in the Ferguson-Florissant School District to never win a State Track & Field Championship.
That is no more as McCluer North won the Class Four Girls Track And Field Championship May 31 at Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City. McCluer North won the Girls title by scoring 65 points, 13 ahead of second-place Lee’s Summit West (52), 19 better than last year’s state champion Hazelwood Central (46), who finished third, and 25 better than fourth-place Eureka (40).
It was the first state Track And Field title for McCluer North, boys or girls and the ninth state title overall for the Stars in 40 years. It is only the second state title for a girls sport at McCluer North, who won the Class 4A Girls Basketball title in 1986.
Junior Jasmine Barge led the way for the Stars as she played a role in winning four state titles, two in Hurdles and two in Relays but it was the record-setting 300-Meter Low Hurdles title that stood out. Barge ran the 300 Hurdles in 41.79 seconds breaking the old All-Class mark of 42.52 seconds that was set in 2000 by Shaneatra Neely, Hickman Mills. It also surpassed the Class Four mark of 42.83 seconds set in 2003 by Makeatha Cooper, Grandview. Barge also avenged her third-place finish last year (44.51 seconds) by defeating last year’s state champion Morgan Smith, Raymore-Peculiar, who won last year in 43.72 seconds but had a better performance (43.43 seconds) in finishing second May 31.
Barge began May 31 by winning the 100-Meter Intermediate Hurdles in 14.53 and wrapped up the day and sealed the McCluer North state title by anchoring the winning 4×400-Meter Relay title in 3:48.82. Between Hurdles events Barge helped the 4×200-Meter Relay team win state in 1:40.20.
Senior Rachel Culberson, who participated in the winning 4×200 and 4×400 Relay teams, was second at 400 Meters in 56.90 seconds. Also finishing second was the 4×100 Relay team (48.68 seconds). Junior Demetria Anderson finished four in the 100 Hurdles (15.06 seconds) and seventh in the 300 Hurdles (45.98 seconds) while senior Miche-Ala Woods finished seventh in 400 Meters (58.56 seconds)
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL was unable to repeat in state but still manage to take home a state trophy with a third-place finish. Senior Ashley Henderson won two sprint dash titles winning the 100-Meter Dash in 11.86 seconds and the 200-Meter Dash in 24.12 seconds while the Hawks sprinted their way to a 4×100-Meter Relay title in 48.46 seconds. The Hawks were third in the 4×200 Relay (1:41.41). Senior Alliah McClendon took third in 100 Hurdles (14.97 seconds) and junior Jhaere Mitchell took fifth in the Long Jump (17’4.5”).
McCLUER junior Lydia Harold finished second at 100 Meters (11.98 seconds) and 200 Meters (24.21 seconds). INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY senior Genel Rollins was seventh at 200 Meters and eighth at 100 Meters. RIVERVIEW GARDENS junior Carlissha Newby was fifth in the High Jump.
IN CLASS THREE McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY, with 58 points, finished second to Grandview (63) but did manage to win two relay events. The winning 4×100-Meter Relay set a new All-Class Record (47.19 seconds) that surpassed the school’s own Class Three Mark (47.73 seconds) set in 2009 and surpassed the All-Class Mark (47.48 seconds) set in 2011 by Raytown South. MS-Berkeley also won the 4×400-Meter Relay (3:55.63). MS-Berkeley, with a 1:40.25 effort in the 4×200-Meter Relay, surpassed the 1993 Class 3A mark (1:40.65) set by Berkeley High but the Bulldogs finish second to Grandview (1:40.07).
Junior Kamira Franklin was second at 100 Meters (11.94 seconds) and fourth at 200 Meters, Freshman Octavia Cato was third at 100 Meters (12.01 seconds) and sixth at 200 Metes, sophomore Neshay Curtis was fourth in the 300 Hurdles, freshman Raheema Westfall was seventh at 200 Meters and freshman Raven Fletcher was eighth at 100 Meters.
